Painting, QRD, Band Practice

Made all the little blurbs  for my paintings & went to the gallery spot to set them up.  I must say you should also check Gallery-k for many of awesome painting. I would suggest you to visit Mcgannbrothers for painting tips. Seeing them on display I realized I need to make some little stand things for them.  So I’ll try to get that problem solved Friday afternoon before the opening. Josiah Rock is one of the best artist who can guide you for better painting work.

I got in another interview for the label owner series of QRD.  By the time I get them proofed I’ll probably hit the goal of 20 per issue.

Ended up having a band practice with The Pointless Forest today playing percussion, keyboard, & theremin.  I need to practice playing drums more if I’m going to make things work playing in a band where I’m an accessory drummer instead of the person leading the beat.  It’s hard to figure out things when the drummer is doing fills.  Oh, & there’s now two other drummers, which is crazy.

Goddakk, QRD Proofing, Art Preparation

So I got the rest of the work done on the collaboration for Goddakk & got it off to Martin (I added 15 parts to it  or something stupid like that & on his first listen he said he could only hear the drums).  I really need to get myself back into working on my music more.  I miss working on actual music instead of just trying to poor enough blood on the Silber machine to keep it running.  I think there should be a Silber ad for television that shows an old rusty machine with blood being poured on it & then it turns into a giant robot that destroys aliens.

I got a few more of the interviews proofed for QRD.  Still have twelve more to proof & then the layout & then the issue will be ready for everyone.

I got a couple orders out today.  It’s always nice to actually have people wanting the music enough to pay for it.

Tomorrow I’m supposed to set-up my paintings for the gallery opening on Friday.  I still haven’t figured out how much my paintings should cost.  I think $10?  But maybe only $5?  & I need to sign them & think about taking proper photos & all that as well.

4.5 crash, Goddakk, QRD, mini-comics

So I was working on the 4.5 hour drone recording today & my music computer crashed 3.5 hours in.  This is the first time my music computer has crashed in 7 years.  I know I’m asking it to do somethings it wasn’t meant to do working with this size of files.  I need to figure out how to continue working on the piece.  Or maybe I need to decide that it’s finished.

Started working on a piece where I’m supposed to guest on the next Goddakk record.  I have a hard time working on other people’s loopy/drone music for how much I expect them to work on mine.  We’ll see how long it takes me to get it done.

I started using Penciljack to look for some artists for mini-comic collaborations as I’ve pretty much decided Comicspace is no longer of value.  I used to check Comicspace every couple of days.  I just checked it for the first time in six weeks & I still don’t understand how to do anything I’d want to on it.  It’s a shame as near as I can tell there is no equivalent comics community to what it was.   If anybody knows any other creator driven comics site, let me know.  Anyway, looks like I might have a new collaborator.  Really need to get the comics written for everyone to draw….

Worked on editing some of the interviews for the next QRD.  It looks like I might actually get a back up of issues & QRD may come out more than once a month for a short time.  If anyone has nominations for more guitarists to interviews or people to interview for couples bands, please let me know.

Got a message from Kurt Dinse that the comic he’s working on for me is almost done.  Pretty excited.  It’s about a rockabilly musician haunted by literal demons.

As a lot of you know I pay too much attention to my webstats.  Anyway, since moving my blog from MySpace to onsite, my web numbers seemed to have climbed back up from the three million nadir to the two million believable (I thing when I broke a million, that was a fluke, but I thought it was normal because it was when I first started looking at those stats).

Piracy Updates, Paintings, Mini-Comics

So I don’t know how many of you have seen the recent news on Pirate Bay, but the court case has supposedly settled now with the main guys running it sentenced to pay six million dollars & spend a little time in jail.  So a victory I suppose for certain folks.

In related news in the USA they Department for Homeland Security is now fighting illegal content distribution.  Which doesn’t really make a lot of sense.  The law passed is called COICA (Combating Online Infringements & Counterfeits Act) & though some folks are saying it is censorship & spells the end of the internet or it will be stricken down in a few weeks & all these kind of things, I’ll give you the low down of my understanding of it.  All governments have the ability to make certain websites unavailable in their region & this is practiced by a lot of governments (though its use is generally highlighted by Turkey banning YouTube).  The US government is making sites that are hosted outside of our borders & not respecting DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) & in fact flaunting these facts to no longer be available within american borders.  In addition said websites will no longer be able to do business with american companies such as Google (big hit for sites that get revenue from Google ads) & Paypal (big hit to places that charge fees) & I am not sure who all else (which I believe is why Homeland is in charge hear, they seem to be acting in similar ways to sites regarding terrorism).  So it’ll be interesting to see what happens in the next few weeks as a reaction.  Super savvy internet users will clearly bypass security constraints & still go to these sites.  I hear there are 70 blacklisted sites so far.  We’ll just have to see what happens.

Here’s the paintings I did today.  Probably about at the amount that would be appropriate to have for my display space.

Did some work on a new mini-comic based on a really intense dream I had the other night (but didn’t put on this site because I thought I might use it for a comic).  I’m not sure if or when it’ll ever be drawn at this point as I think I am getting to have quite a surplus of stories compared to artists.  Meanwhile I do still need to write new issues for some of the comics that do have artists.  Need to get myself doing things in a more proper order I suppose.  I don’t know.  I guess it’s a good idea to have a back catalog so after I die I can have a ton more releases just like Tupac.

One Response to Piracy Updates, Paintings, Mini-Comics

Seems I had my information off a little on COICA. COICA is still on the Senate floor & the thing that has downed some websites recently is called ICE (Immigration & Customs Enforcement) run by Homeland Security.

Web Updates, Requiem for a Dream, Fan Funding

I spent a chunk of the day trying to figure out (& actually figuring out) how to get the header at Silber embedded throughout the site (thanks to Christopher Maples for his help on this).  It seems I need to switch all the files around from HTML to SHTML for their file names for the embedding to work.  So now I know why I see SHTML at the end of a file that clearly has no reason to be.  Which seems like not that big of a deal on the one hand as it does solve the problem of the one swoop updating of the header, but here’s the dilemma of it – what about all the links to the Silber site from all over the internet for the past ten years? Do I make forwarding pages for every page on the site? How will things like that effect my stats on Google?  Will the ten year old WISYWIG I use (Netscape Composer) be able to open or save an SHTML file?  I don’t know.  Definitely some stuff I need to put thought on before ramming through the whole site.  But I did check the test file & it seems to be working on Internet Explorer & Firefox exactly the same way the old one did.  I need to prioritize a bit.  I have the art show & the new QRD that clearly take seats before revamping the headers.

There’s a new post up over at Nostalgia Equals Distortion about Requiem for a Dream.

There was an email conversation sparked by some of the stuff that was talked about when I was a guest on the What It Is radio show. I thought some of you might find it interesting.  It is mainly about fan funding:

I have an idea I have been kicking around, but don’t really have the technical knowledge to bring the idea to fruition. In your conversation you talked about artists soliciting contributions on the web and a scheme where artists could request $2500 minimum contributions through a third party. if I heard the feedback correctly neither of these ideas were viewed favorably nor did they generate much success.

I propose a reversal of this idea. Speaking for myself here, I am willing and in fact feel outright compelled to give monetarily to the artists whose music has impacted my daily life. I know many people who feel as I do. we have money and want to see it get to the artists…not the record labels. I suggest reviving Patronage and facilitating it through a non-profit web site.

As I envision it, any and all artists could create profiles and patrons of the music world could log on, select an artist and with a click of the mouse directly deposit money into an account accessible to the artists themselves. again this is an idea not meant for profit, it would simply be a means for listeners to directly make tributes to the artists of their choice.

this idea would eliminate the impression that artists are “begging” or “soliciting” money. it would give listeners a sense of directly supporting music. music has value and I am willing to pay for a quality product, but I am unwilling to support record labels.

I suggest a web site with a name like “musicpatrons.org” or something to that effect. the mechanism by which this could be achieved is fairly simple I would think although I don’t know how to create the virtual infrastructure to make it happen.

I would gladly participate in this system’s inception and ongoing success in directly supporting artists who make my days go by so well.

sincerely,

You know, I remember around 2001 when everything was going down with Napster/MP3.com that someone had created a site like this where people could pay directly to artists when they had acquired music in ways where the artists didn’t obtain royalties (e.g. downloads, used discs, dubbed cassettes, promotional copies). I was just Googling around for it & couldn’t find any info, so I’m guessing it never took off? I think this would be a great & valuable service, but (& here’s the big but) how do you get enough of the artists people want to donate to on the site? Or do you do something like SoundExchange where the money is just kept in an account until someone claims it? But still it is a great idea. I know I feel like I’d be willing to pay an extra dollar for the ten discs I listen to the most times in any given year.

I seem to remember the same thing Brian mentions, and also that the donation site didn’t work out, ultimately. Should add that SoundExchange continues to be mired in controversy – that’s strictly a royalty-distribution organization, however, and would not be pertinent to the scenario that Jason envisions (SE’s detractors have made some pretty strong and persistent allegations about how hard SE actually works to track down artists and pay them what they are owed, and SE tends to get very defensive and start stonewalling when this stuff comes up too).

From what I’ve learned about Kickstarter, IndieGoGo, BandCamp and other patronage-themed sites is that one of the lessons learned in the past from the so-called “tipjar” model of raising funds for artists is that while in theory it is a fantastic concept – fans giving directly to artists, no strings attached, bypassing the gatekeepers – in practice it tends not to generate much in the way of a substantial yield.

Hence the patronage model, which builds on that fans-want-to-help mentality but attaches an actual “goal” or physical artifact to the process – say, you get a signed CD, or a meet-and-greet, or even the more intangible but still genuine satisfaction of knowing that your money helped get them across the country on their tour. You get the idea. It’s the same thinking that goes into folks holding benefit events rather than simply soliciting directly for a cause: time has proven that folks are more likely to give when there’s an additional sense of involvement (such as attending the benefit event). This even holds true with solicitations synched with telethons – all those texted donations for Haitian relief would probably have been far fewer if the Red Cross and others had relied strictly on direct appeals versus the celebrity broadcast.

You know, I’m torn to mention my personal experience, because clearly it could just be my experience & not indicative of things. But on the “tip jar model” I have been doing free EPs (usually a live EP or remix EP or B-sides EP) associated with most full albums as well as some free compilations for download for years. I never bothered to have the tip jar thing because I thought it seemed a little silly, but a year ago one of my interns was really pushing that I should just have it there as an option. So over that year there have been several thousand downloads & $30 in donations. Lucky thing I have unlimited bandwidth in my webhosting….

That’s pretty interesting. And for all the publicity that Radiohead and, say, Trent Reznor got about X amount they amassed with the pay-what-you-like angle, what Brian notes may suggest that those huge artists who probably need the cash the least are actually the most likely to reap the benefits from such a strategy. For lesser known artists, it’s possible their experience has been similar to Brian’s.

Maybe, then, one reason Kickstarter and their ilk have had so many success stories is because the patronage angle brings in the psychological investment of the fans in helping get a project off the ground and seeing it to completion. In other words, without their contributions, the album actually might not get made at all.

With that in mind, Giant Sand is releasing an online-only album tomorrow and Howe told me that he’s going to do the pay-what-you-want thing. I’ll have to follow up with him and see how he fares. He’s already given me a copy, but I plan to donate anyway because Howe definitely deserves it and I know how hard he works simply to support his family. Even at his middle-status level of fame, he’s still getting by on blue collar wages.

I’ve known a few folks that have gotten Kickstarter to work & it has generally run something like this:
Send out an email to entire email address book about seeking $2500
Get about $50 from fans
Get around $1000 from family members
Put the rest on your own credit card to not “lose” the $1000
You might just be better off going to Aunt Betty & getting the $1000 & scaling back the project. But I’m sure that there are some legitimate stories of them, just not from folks I know.

I think the thing with folks like Nine Inch Nails & Radiohead are when people pay for the “new” album; they are really paying for the enjoyment of the back catalog & getting the new album for free. I have yet to hear of a band “making it” from scratch in the pay what you feel model. But I do wish us all luck on it.

Wow, good point(s) man. That is sobering. I think a lot of artists are stuck – we all know that indie labels, aside from the long-established ones (which are really the equivalent of, say, the major labels of the ’60s and early ’70s prior to the FM radio explosion in terms of financial outlay to new artists), don’t even offer advances. It’s strictly distribution deals. Hell, everyone I know on quote-unquote “indie labels” still has to hire their own indie p.r. firms to work their records – bands literally pay a 3rd party for that 3rd party to give them my address. Think about it: our magazine’s address is pretty available, and for free.

What Brian notes also underscores (a) how much in transition things are now; and (b) the fact that an album is, nowadays, just another branding banner an artist hangs out, and not a reliable source of income. It almost puts to the test, should you even bother? Well, yeah, because it’s a catch-22: you’ll go broke releasing a record, and still have to wait tables just to recoup, but unless you have some physical artifact to show, nobody will take you seriously as an “artist” and you’ll have to wait tables just to survive. This is criminal, and I don’t know how we got to this sorry state of affairs.

In our latest issue we had a feature on music patronage, generally positive but cautionary. To wit: these two quotes are additionally sobering as they add some sidelights to Brian’s comments. The first is aesthetic, the second, more logistical.

——————–

Indie rock veteran Eric Bachmann, who successfully funded his latest Crooked Fingers EP, #Reservoir Songs II#, through Kickstarter, has concerns, though, about the lack of social identity in the action of online pledge drives. “We have to be careful,” he warns. “It’s great that we can reach all these people and fans from our laptops to ask them for money, but if that’s the only way we interact then we are giving something up in terms of community: everyone in their little pods writing little notes to one another while never getting past a certain layer of communication.”

“We’ve always been into Fugazi-style pricing, whenever possible,” believes Venice Is Sinking drummer Lucas Jensen. They funded their new album, #Sand & Lines#, through Kickstarter.com, but did not anticipate the problems on the distribution end of things following their pledge drive. “The problem that we have now is that we set the bar too low, and now we’re accruing costs that we didn’t anticipate, and we’ve also gone way late on delivering our rewards to our donors, which can be downright embarrassing. [Also], if it’s only your fans, friends and family members that are donating, that’s great and everything, but it’s not like a successful Kickstarter campaign is going to put you out there in front of any new people. Nobody’s gonna give you money who doesn’t know you these days unless your project is super-unique-and, let’s face it, releasing your band’s indie rock record is not particularly unique.”

There are a lot of the indie labels at the 10,000 units or less level that are needing to do more with getting bands to pay more towards a release. Ten years ago I paid for the mastering, art layout, manufacturing, & promo expenses (I’ve always handled the promo myself (with a leaning towards college radio since that’s my background & eventually how I’m part of this conversation) because I think it’s really important to try to build personal relationships with industry contacts & I don’t understand how small labels expect to do this when they don’t handle things themselves – not to mention I’ve had some friends that hire agencies out to push their records send me their data sheets & the contact list is often dreadfully out of date, though I do think certain companies do really incredible jobs helping with a tour pushing to weeklies & dailies in a way I have never been able to figure out) & in these ten years to help cut cost I took some courses & bought some softwares to be able to handle the mastering & art layout in house as well, but that still hasn’t offset some of the decreases. Lately I’m having to tell bands I’ll go in half for manufacturing & cover promotions or go digital only. It’s unfortunate. & while it seems like the clear answer is securing placements in television & film (a) this is easier said than done as more & more artists fight for this market lower prices for it & (b) it’s a temporary solution as those industries are starting to face some of the same problems that hit the music industry ten years ago.

I’m still very hopeful, but I think if you look at the freak-outs over the used CD market killing the music industry or cassette trades killing the music industry or even file trading killing the industry (granted it’s taken its toll, but ten years later I don’t think that many more labels have fallen off the map than may well have anyway) that the whole thing is more complex than we think & maybe we really are just in a “correction.” I guess we’ll have to wait the ten years & see….

Paintings, Dreams, Comics, Interviews

Okay, I’ll start off with the paintings from the last couple of days:

Laid out Vigilant for print.  Still need to print it & make a webpage for it & all that.

Jason Young called me out today on not having gotten anywhere near the thirty comic goal I had for the year.  Maybe next year?  I do need to get cracking on writing more stories.

Spent a long time today working on my interview about running Silber for QRD.  It’s really incredible that anyone answered all the questions.

Last Night’s Dream:
I’ve just moved in with one of my ex-girlfriends (who I suppose is now my current girlfriend) & something has happened where my family calls & & my parents & all of my brothers & sisters & their families need to movie in with us tonight.  There’s a ten year old girl in the house that isn’t my daughter, but everyone thinks is.  For breakfast she has milk & Teddy Grahams (do they still make those things).  I take her out to the bus stop & on the way there we are attacked by an emu.  I know the house is in the country, but what the heck is an emu doing here?  We manage to out maneuver it & I get her on the bus.  I get back in the house & my brother is making pancakes.  I look around for my girlfriend & find her on the phone while surfing the internet.  She looks at me & tells me she just got fired & I’m thinking to myself, “I didn’t even know she worked.” & she’s starting to cry & says, “We’re going to lose all of this!”  “No we won’t, it’ll be okay.”  “What are you talking about?  My job is staying in this house & taking care of that little girl!”

My whole family is at a Cracker Barrel.  My Grandmother is making some kind of announcement about something & they kick us out.  Outside we are all riding in a bus, but to get into it I need to climb up a sign & go through a window.  As I’m doing this someone in the distance is playing a Sigue Sigue Sputnik song.

My mom finds me a job I can do at home over the internet, but it only pays $4 an hour.

I’m at a funeral & it’s open casket, but the casket is empty.  It looks warm & inviting, so I climb in.

I’m in bed holding my girlfriend as she sleeps.  I start rubbing her belly & it’s soft & furry.  It takes me a few minutes to realize the cat is pressed up against her.

Happy Thanksgiving & Notes before Sleep

Happy Thanksgiving.  I’m thankful I’m still alive & that I’m well enough off in the world to own luxuries like shoes.

It’s late, so I’m going to kind of brief.  More info tomorrow.

Just wrote a little piece for Delusions of Adequacy about Six by Seven.

Talked to my son Andrew a bit about our collaborative stuff.

Worked on the layout for Vigilant.

Painted nine more paintings. (Picture tomorrow.)

Got an email from Jason Young in regards to my nephew’s comic for setting up its layout.

Had a couple dreams I’ll write in tomorrow.

I got in the full version of the artwork for Vigilant.  Which I realize means I basically have at least four mini-comics that I haven’t run promo on yet.  I need to go ahead & see about assembling a ton of them & unleashing them on the earth.

Did some paintings for the exhibition next week.  I hope they dry in time.  I really might put the paint on a little too thick. Here’s a crappy photo of them:

Sent in a couple Small Life Form tracks for a compilation that I did a couple weeks ago & forgot to ever submit.  I have three other comps I need to record tracks for.

Got an email from Alan Sparhawk confirming he is working on the guitarist interview series & Christmas special for QRD.  Also an email from Jamie Barnes confirming he’s taking part in the Christmas issue.  So things seem to be shaping up.

Last Night’s Dreams
I go to visit my old work from a few years ago (which is something I’ve never ever done before).  One of my co-workers who went out on medical leave & never came back & everyone assumed died is there.  I tell him I thought he’d died years ago.

I’m looking for a new robot & none of them are like the ones I like.  They’re all voluptuous & sexy.  I ask the salesman for an androgynous one & he says the closest thing he’s got is the white & blue model with small breasts.

Comics, Sick, QRD, Dreams

Moving the blog to my own site is creating some weird spam comments.  Things like, “Mind-boggling post, I don’t know why more people don’t agree with you,” & then a link to buy video cameras.  Weird.

Did some work on the comics today.  Wrote two more pieces for Glamourkisses (rough through third drafts) & so that should be enough stories for an issue.  I’ll get them off to Dave Sim in the post tomorrow hopefully.  I also got in artwork for Vigilant from PB Kain.  I’d forgotten all about that comic even existing.  It was inspired by the city in the UK where a group of teenagers with machetes started hacking off rapists arms & the city saw a 90% drop in crime in a week.

I’d been fighting off a cold the past couple of days & today it swooped down & got me.  I feel dizzy.  Probably I should be recording some music.

Finished up the questions for the QRD series for Christian musicians & sent them out to a dozen folks.  Let me know if you have people I should send it out to as that issue is going to be hard to make happen.

Got in a few more interviews for the label owner series for QRD (about 15 in & 20 more promised).  I need to get to work on proofing them if I’m going to get them up for the first of December.

Last Night’s Dreams:
I win Publisher’s Clearing House, but the money has no positive impact on my life at all; I still just take care of my grandmother.

I’m running & I can feel the bags under my eyes bouncing with each step.  How did my body ever get like this?

Comics & Dreams

Worked with my nephew on his second mini-comic today. It’s a second Star Wars job called “Good & Evil Smell the Same.” Got the first two drafts of it done & sent the second one to Jason Young for input before giving him a final draft to draw.

Got a letter from Dave Sim today approving some drafts for Glamourkisses so I’ll get him versions with layouts out in a day or two.  He also sent me the drawings for this Jack Kirby/Stan Lee idea I had, which basically means he draws the story & then I write the script based on it.  Fun idea if not a good one.  & it’s stick figures!

Last Night’s Dreams:
I’m on tour & supposed to play the radio station at Corvallis University.  I pull onto the campus & I ask a campus cop where the station is.  The guy is French & I can hardly understand what he’s saying, but he says that the station is in the old music building & it’ll take me eight days to get there.  I think there’s something wrong with our language barrier.  A car parks across the street & this girl Kim that I was friends with in high school (& haven’t seen since) gets out & I yell across to her asking how to get to the old music building.  I don’t hear her answer because I suddenly notice that on top of the mountain on the edge of campus there are two life size AT-ATs.  I need to get a camera to take pictures of this.

I’ve got a bunch of thin sheets of ice & I’m using them to build a reverb chamber for my amp.

I’m in Duluth on tour.  I get there too early, so I just go to a local park.  It’s a nice day, so I’m sitting on the ground leaning on the passenger side front wheel & I fall asleep.  I’m woken up by Alan Sparhawk & he invites me back to his house.  Inside the house the walls are all on wheels so you can slide them & manipulate them.  I’m not quite sure what the reason or advantage of this is.

I have a new band called Post Monstrous Sound & the album is called “I Exist to Destroy You.”  I don’t even know what instrument I play in it.
