Grendel: Devil’s Oddysey #1

Grendel: Devil's Odyssey

So I first started reading Grendel when I was 9 with issue 10 of the original run.  Sex, violence, flying cars, & a kabuki werewolf – so maybe not age appropriate, but no more so than favorite movies of the …

Somewhat Relevant – Beyond

beyond 2014
So I would say this maybe should go under “Finally Checking It Out” since it’s five years old, but I’ve never heard of it until now when it was recommended to me on FilmRise, so I’m guessing it’s new to …

Emerald City

I think pretty much everyone born after 1940 has the 1939 MGM version of The Wizard of Oz stuck in as the definitive version of the story & so do I.  It’s a part of childhood & for me connected …

Somewhat Relevant – Penny Dreadful #1

Penny-Dreadful-#1If you haven’t seen the Penny Dreadful TV show, it’s worth checking out.  Doctor Frankenstein, a good witch, & a cowboy fighting vampires… wait… that sounds awful… but it really is good with high quality acting, costuming, & cinematography.  So …

Somewhat Relevant – Rom #0

Rom #0So for those not in the know, Rom is a failed toy from 1979 & a moderately successful Marvel comic in the 1980s.  Because of the comic being based on the toy there are weird licensing issues that have caused …

Somewhat Relevant – Iggy Pop: Post Pop Depression

People who’ve known me a while know I’m a pretty big Iggy Pop fan. I love the first Stooges record so much that I will buy & listen to pretty much anything he does. That said, a lot of his …

Somewhat Relevant: Crimson Peak

Crimson PeakI’d say I’m a fan of Guillermo Del Toro. So when I saw the trailer for a Victorian Era ghost story from him I was pretty excited.  If that’s what you are excited about, just stick with the trailer. As …

For the last few years it seems like horror movies are really focused toward gore & torture porn & sexy teenagers.  Maybe that’s always been true & it’s just gotten less appealing to me as I’ve gotten older & the …

Somewhat Relevant – Whiplash

whiplash
So the main reason I wanted to see this movie was it got some praise from Scotty Irving (Clang Quartet) & it’s rare for him to bother to talk about films that aren’t about super heroes or giant …

  1. I watch all kinds of movies, but seldom feel compelled to say anything, as you have said. This movie disturbed me on many levels, which is why I felt the need to comment. J K Simmons is a great actor. He played this character a little TOO well for me, at times. This movie reminded me of many aspects of life that I have dealt with far too often, such as: abusive fellow bandmates, family indifference, and even an abusive Boy Scout leader. Am I saying I am a wuss and can’t take it? Maybe. Watching something on screen that reminds me of aspects of my real life is not easy for me. Yes, I do think it is a great movie, but I will probably never watch it again.

    • I hear you Scotty. It can be too close to home, but I imagine some of those bandmates are who pushed you to be the incredible drummer you are. I always just quit bands when things got hard….

Somewhat Relevant – Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For

I consider myself a Frank Miller fan.  I really loved his 1980s comics growing up & re-reading some of them, they are still pretty awesome (especially Dark Night Returns & Daredevil Born Again).  When the Sin City comics came …
