Recording Remora/SLF

So I guess the Remora recordings has gotten a bit in the way of the blog.

We’re basically averaging around a song a day, but I hope to speed it up as we’re headed towards songs that are more fully formed & have been road tested a bit.  The songs recorded so far are “Does the Music,” “Awake & Arise,” “Let’s Fall in Love,” & I can’t remember the fourth one at the moment.

I tried to do a Small Life Form optical theremin sunrise recording this morning & ran into a ton of problems.  I was trying to get ready quickly & knocked a wire loose on one of the theremins, then the other theremin’s battery ran out.  I had the camera not pointed quite right because I didn’t realize how the coastline of the beach is aligned here.  Also on camera were a ton of people walking on the beach & a little work truck going by.  So if I try tomorrow morning, I’m not sure exactly how to deal with the problem of the coast not being abandoned.  I might wait & try it in the winter or at some kind of higher vantage point than I’m currently able to or off a pier or something like that.  I also don’t know if the audio is as interesting as I want it to be.  I’m not able to bring the whole rig out without electricity & the theremin’s pure sine wave type tone slowly going up in pitch just sounds like an iDose or whatever.

Got out the final follow-up for the last batch of comics I sent out.  Hopefully it’ll generate some more reviews.  I really need to get to work on the next batch of comics.  A few are out waiting for art, but I have about 7 to write.

Microphones, Cats, & Dogs

Had a few extra minutes, so I thought I’d double blog.

The mic shoot-out in the studio for my vocal between my trusty Shure Beta 58, a $2000 Neuman, a Shure SM 7, & a Sennheiser MD421 was won by the Sennheiser.  It looks like a cross between an electric razor & an old sci fi gun & while it does handle my voice better in general, it emphasizes my “s”s a bit more than the Beta.  Probably going to buy one to use at home (unless somebody wants to mail me one for free), so buy some Silber stuff so I have the extra $300 to get it.

Trying to get some more of the MySpace promo campaign done during the downtime I’ve got.  I just finished sending out the messages for Rivulets & started working on the Remora campaign.

I want to try to do a photoshoot called “Lilly’s Hair Club for Men” where I take the hair that this cat Lilly is shedding & work it into my shaved head for comedic results, but unfortunately I think I got most of the hair she’s shedding for doing it as a onetime joke….

Two Recent Pet Peeves:
If you are going to invite me to a Facebook event & the venue is really somebody’s house, it should mention that in the description & it also should have the address.  Also, if you live more than 50 miles away from me you should never invite me to anything unless your going to advance me airfare.

If you are going to be in a touring band & live in a van you really shouldn’t own a dog.  If you live in a van & own a dog to protect your equipment, it probably shouldn’t be a six month old beagle.  If your guard puppy is hanging its head out of the van window during your show & somebody starts petting it, you shouldn’t run outside & try to start a fight.  Especially if it’s licking them in the face at the time.

Remora recordings

Rough first day in the studio.  Eight hours working on one song & it’s not completed.  But it is a song about the politics of war & Frankenstein, so maybe it’s understandable that I need to get it just right.  But I really am hoping to speed up the process a bit.  Maybe 8 piano parts is excessive for someone who doesn’t know how to play a piano.  & the vocals I’m a little torn on as there’s an angry vocal version that matches the music & a lullaby vocal version that I think adds irony & emphasizes the aggression of the music.  It’s interesting to work with someone else for sure as even when Jon DeRosa (Aarktica) or Peter Aldrich (Remora bass player around 2005) tried to help me record there were tons of me wanting to be the boss issues & I’m trying not to do that this time, which occasionally means me needing to walk outside as if I was still smoking cigars.  I guess working on the reality of not having control over all situations is something I need to work on….

I did get a little work done on a top secret recording.  I might mix it tomorrow.  At least then I’ll have one album done of the seven I hoped for in the week.

Problems

So last night’s show had some kind of technical issue & technical issues throw off my performance or at least my mood & makes me feel like I have a lousy show whether I actually did or not.  Some kind of weird distortion sounds coming from either my rig (I’d re-worked it to use my new POG on the demos, but didn’t switch the rig around for the live show, so maybe I had some knobs adjusted bad for the volume of the normal rig) or amp (I didn’t look to see if the knobs had been twisted in transit which is my suspicion, the Roland JC distortion is a little bit bad in my opinion).

This morning before going to the studio I am having some computer problems.  Pagemaker magically stopped being able to make PDFs again.  It did this a few weeks ago & then came back.  In addition, because my computer is old, I couldn’t get it on the local internet because of the security settings.  Being away from the internet for a few days could well be a good thing for me though.

Yesterday I listened to the demos of the songs I’m working on three or four times.  It worked out well as far as helping me to get a different listening perspective & being able to say, I need to change a line or two in a couple songs.  I often wish I had someone that I could work with in a way where they could call me out on what isn’t working in my music & give a lot of constructive advice, but I’ve never heard anyone do anything like that with lyrics for anyone really.  I’m still debating about if I should do radio edits of songs to get swears out (I don’t really think Remora has any songs that say “fuck” in them prior to this album & this time there are two).

Heading to the Beach/Studio

Spent most of the day trying to get some things ready for going to Myrtle Beach tomorrow to start recording.  I think I finally figured out the guitar part for “We Come from the Sea” (it was originally written for my project “The Call of…” (Lovecraftian based band done as americana instead of metal with a male & female vocal & instrumentation of acoustic guitar, accordion, & percussion) that never took off & it’s all twelve string guitar strum so it mainly just sounds like a big wall of strings) & I wrote guitar parts for “Peanut Butter Cup” & “Close Enough to God.”  The possibility for this week is recording a total of two Remora albums, two Small Life Form albums, an Electric Bird Noise versus Remora album, an Electric Bird Noise album, & a Jazzus Priest album as well as mixing down two other albums.  Which would mean completing more than an album a day.  Which is kinda pushing the realm of possibility pretty hard, but I think three could happen.  It all depends on how the more precision & fully realized style of Brian McKenzie molds well with the primitive & minimalist style of Brian John Mitchell.

I still need to pack everything.  & I suppose it’s going to be on the cusp as far as fitting everything in my car as I need to take down four guitars, two keyboards, two amps, & a bunch of other junk.

Did some scanning in for trying to improve the artwork on a few of the older digital downloads in the back catalog.  The problem is the scanner picks up the registration dots when I scan it in to be the proper size.  So it is still going to look less than ideal.

Free Download of Your Choice, QRD, Future Album Work

Okay, I’m going to be starting to give away 5 downloads a month selected at random from folks who sign-up (or re-sign-up) for the mailing list.  Making the sign-up available for the first time right here:

Quantcast

Did some work towards the next QRD.  Got twelve interviews in so far, hoping to make it to twenty again, but we’ll see what happens.

Talked to Brian McKenzie a bit more about working on the Remora album & some about helping with the artwork for the upcoming Electric Bird Noise.

More Circuits, Demo Transcriptions, MySpace, Dream

Bam! I made another optical theremin today.  Even did some modifications on the design to fit my needs.  Pretty stoked right now about things.  I’ll go buy some more parts tomorrow to make some more.

Transcribed 6 of the 10 songs from the Remora demos that I’m supposed to focus on recording.  Practiced them a little too.  I looked up the lyrics to the song I have that I have occasionally played live over the year that I consider a Kreator rip off & realized it really is not too close to it.  Two half lines in common with a different vocal melody & different guitar riff I suppose qualifies as an original song.  I might try to transcribe some of the other songs that I already wrote guitar parts for, finding the melodies in my head from the others & transcribing those is a much harder task for me than it should be.  I miss having some one conveniently available to sing a melody line to that can spout back, “Those are these six notes!”  I know supposedly there is software that can do this, but whenever I’ve tried it, it hasn’t worked out, so if anyone has tried one that does work, let me know about it.

Got some more done towards the MySpace promo for the new releases.  It’s a 50 day or so project & I keep forgetting to work on it.  I do have to admit MySpace does seem a bit on the wane lately in activity.  Not many new friends or messages this month.

Last Night’s Dream
McKenzie Phillips pours me a tumbler of brandy.  She has her brandy in one of those fancy shot glasses that looks like a wine glass.  After she finishes hers she keeps taking sips off of mine, but she wipes it before & after each sip like a chalice at a church communion service.

Optical Theremin, Piracy, Russia, Remora on the Radio, MRR vs WSJ

I finally got my first electronic home made project to work.  I’ve tried to make several over the years, but my first success is with an optical theremin.  Interestingly (at least for me) this is the third optical theremin I’ve owned & they all have sounded significantly different in tone.  Probably I should look at them all & see if they use the same integrated circuits & resisters & such & see if I can figure out a way to integrate the best parts of each one.  Also it makes me think I can fix some of my 1960 Walco pedals & build some other things.  The secret was getting a new soldering iron.

For those who are interested about how I’ve been fighting other people distributing Silber releases unauthorized, I wrote a little piece about it over at Music Think Tank.

I just joined the most popular Russian social networking site VKontakte.  We’ll see if it’s worth it to promote things or if it ends up being as valuable as the old  Friendster account.

Over at Music World Radio Remora made it in at number 12 if you want to vote to keep it in the charts.  Also Irata is nominated to be in the charts for next week.  Our slow takeover of the world is beginning.

If you read Maximum Rock & Roll, the mini-comics are reviewed in the zine round up of the August issue.  I was reading through some of the editorials in it & I’d forgotten that they have good writers, but they do.  At times it feels as good from a literary perspective as The Wall Street Journal. (Wait, is that a joke?  comparing MRR & WSJ?  Strangely, no.  & I think literati who aren’t skewed by politics would agree with me.)

Postcards, Remora, Muscle Mass, Short Compilation

Sent the postcards in for printing today to promote the new releases.  So something actually completed & scratched off the to do list.

Talked with Brian McKenzie about the new Remora record (tentatively titled Hurtless) he is going to act as producer/engineer on.  It’s a much different record than I anticipated.  I sent him a ton of demos & he didn’t choose to work with the songs that relatively sound like Electric Bird Noise, but instead the quirky pop song side of Remora (a la Songs I Sing) & acoustic guitar stuff.  So we’ll see what the results will be.  I’d kind of thought there would eventually be a Remoricana record, but I thought I’d record it in Louisville with Jamie Barnes.

Recorded a few demos in the style of my Muscle Mass project (cheap keyboard dance music).  Not sure if I’m going to try to make that band happen again or bring it back into the fold of Remora.

I got an email from Ben about a third rival compilation for our upcoming short song compilation.  There  must be some kind of disease going around so everyone wants to do that kind of comp.

Physicals of Irata & Lotte Kestner & Social Networking stuff

I signed up for a ReverbNation account for Silber because a friend of mine has been using their mailing list stuff & I liked how it seemed to work.  But I found out after signing up for it that the free version is only good for 500 contacts (too low for Silber) & the full version is $10 a month & I’m not convinced it is worth that much to me.  I am a little impressed by the ability to sign-up as a label so that all the bands are linked properly to you & use an RSS feed to populate the on-site blog.  But of course I don’t think they have the site traffic to pursue them too heavily.  But they may well be worth the thirty minutes it takes to set-up an account if the 500 limit mailing list works for you.  Otherwise I’d say you’re at least as well off signing up on Bebo (used to be pretty big in the UK) or Hi5 (still pretty big in Italy), but how many sites do you want to try to manage?  Right now, to be honest, I’m not managing any social networks properly I suppose.  I think that in general they are going to fade back out.  I have friends getting rid of the internet in their house & just going into the library for an hour a week & that’s probably what I should be doing if I want to increase my actual creative output in life.

I had a glitch in the rotating images in the header banner on the website & I fixed it on the front page.  I’ll wait to repopulate it until I have more updates.

For some reason Twitter wasn’t working properly for about an hour a day.  My feed wasn’t going into the Silber site nor going into other people’s sites who use it in a similar way.  Then it magically started working again.

I got a few physical copies in to sell of Lotte Kestner & Irata (for the standard $12 ($14 international) price) if you are interested – http://www.silbermedia.com

Put a bunch of reviews of Lotte Kestner’s China Mountain up on the site – http://www.silbermedia.com/lottekestner/chinamountain.html

Did some work on the questions for the bass players interview series for QRD.  Hoping to get them ready in about a week.
