He Was a Quiet Man, La Jetee, & Owl Creek Bridge

I didn’t really get too much accomplished today.  Just worked on some stuff for QRD mainly.

I also watched He Was a Quiet Man again which is kind of a Donnie Darko/Office Space/Punch Drunk Love hybrid starring Christian Slater.  So if the Christian Slater part makes it sound better to you, then you’ll probably like it.  The portion at the bottom of this entry (after the videos) is a bit of a spoiler for the movie.

As a lot of you might know, one of the things I’m kind of obsessed with is time travel.  Especially La Jetee, which I just found out Time magazine named as the best time travel movie of all time (but strangely Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure also made their top ten).  & I found that the whole thing’s available to watch online, so here you go:

I also found this bizarre tribute to La Jetee from Sigue Sigue Sputnik.  I’m not sure exactly how I feel about it.  The way too fast of text is a bit annoying, but in general I could figure out a lot of it as it quotes La Jetee at times.

Okay now for the spoiler bit on He Was a Quiet Man.  So it is basically the last moment of life artificial life story as made famous by “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” (you can read it here if you never have, it’s about 8 pages long) in the 1880s.  But I decided to trace back a bit & supposedly the following is the earliest version of this story I could find as fiction (I’ll grant you there may be some mythology stories that could be classed like this).  It was a pain to find, so I figured I’d just paste the text in for you below.  But I do find it interesting that the idea goes back this many hundreds of years & you have to wonder if it doesn’t go further back.  Because granted I’m from a point in time where “it was all a dream” is a bit of an overused plot device, but it seems like this idea is hardwired into me & I remember having trouble separating dreams from reality as a child & always being a bit obsessed with them.

Count Lucanor, or The Fifty Pleasant Stories of Patronio
Written by Prince Don Juan Manuel (1337, translated 1868 by James York)

CHAPTER XII

Of that which happened to a Dean of Santiago, with Don Man, the Magician, who lived at Toledo.

One day Count Lucanor was conversing with Patronio, whose advice he sought under the following circumstances. “Patronio,” said he, “a man came to me and begged I would assist him, knowing I was able to do so, promising to serve me in return, at any time, either for the promotion of my interest or honour. I rendered him all the assistance in my power, when, before his trouble was removed (although he believed it to be so), a circumstance happened in which I knew he could render me assistance, which I begged him to do; but he made me some excuse. Since then another case has arisen where he could have been of service to me, but again, as before, he has excused himself, and in every instance when I have needed his help he has always declined assisting me under some plea or other. Now his difficulties are not yet removed, nor can they be without my assistance. I, therefore, pray you, having so much confidence in your judgment, to advise me how to act under such circumstances.”

“Count Lucanor,” said Patronio, “in order that you may know how to act in such a case, it is desirable that you should hear what happened to a Dean of Santiago, with Don Illan, who was a great magician, and dwelt in Toledo.”

The Count begged he would narrate it.

“My lord,” said Patronio, “there was a Dean of Santiago who had a great desire to be initiated in the art of necromancy; and, hearing that Don Illan of Toledo knew more of this art than any other person in that country, came to Toledo with a view of studying under him. On the day of his arrival he proceeded to the house of Don Illan, whom he found reading in a retired chamber, and who received him very graciously, desiring him not to inform him of the motive of his visit until he had first partaken of his repast, which was found excellent, and consisted of every delicacy that could be desired.

“Now, when the repast was concluded, the dean took the magician aside and told him the motive of his visit, urging him very earnestly to instruct him in the art in which he was so great an adept, and which he, the dean, desired so anxiously to be made acquainted with.

“When Don Ulan told him that he was a dean and, consequently, a man of great influence, and that he would attain a high position, saying, at the same time, that men, generally speaking, when they reach an elevated position and attain the objects of their ambition, forget easily what others have previously done for them, as also all past obligations and those from whom they received them failing generally in the performance of their former promises, the dean assured him such should not be the case with him; saying, no matter to what eminence he might attain, he would not fail to do everything in his power to help his former friends, and the magician in particular.

“In this way they conversed until supper-time approached; and now, the covenant between them being completed, Don Ulan said to the dean, that, in teaching him the art he desired to learn, it would be necessary for them to retire to some distant apartment, and, taking him by the hand, led him to a chamber. As they were quitting the dining room, he called his housekeeper, desiring her to procure some partridges for their supper that night, but not to cook them until she had his special commands. Having said this, he sought the dean and conducted him to the entrance of a beautifully carved stone staircase, by which they descended a considerable distance, appearing as if they had passed under the river Tagus, and, arriving at the bottom of the steps, they found a suite of rooms and a very elegant chamber, where were arranged the books and instruments of study; and, having here seated themselves, they were debating which should be the first books to read, when two men entered by the door and gave the dean a letter which had been sent to him by his uncle the archbishop, informing him that he was dangerously ill, and that if he wished to see him alive it would be requisite for him to come immediately. The dean was much moved by this news partly on account of the illness of his uncle, but more through the fear of being obliged to abandon his favourite study, just commenced so he wrote a respectful letter to his uncle the archbishop, which he sent by the same messengers. At the end of four days, other men arrived on foot bringing fresh letters to the dean, informing him that the archbishop was dead, and that all those interested in the welfare of the Church were desirous that he should succeed to his late uncle’s dignity, telling him, at the same time, it was quite unnecessary for him to inconvenience himself by returning immediately, as his nomination would be better secured were he not present in the church. At the end of seven or eight days, two squires arrived, very richly dressed and accoutered, who, after kissing his hand, delivered to him the letters informing him that he had been appointed archbishop.

“When Don Ulan heard this he told him he was much pleased that this good news had arrived during his stay in his house; and, as God had been so gracious to him, begged that the deanery now vacant might be given to his son.

“The archbishop elect replied, that he hoped Don Ulan would allow him to name to the vacancy his own brother, saying, at the same time, that he would present him with some office in his own church with which his son would be contented, inviting, at the same time, both father and son to accompany him to Santiago.

“To this they consented; and all three departed for the city, where they were received with much honour. After they had resided there some time, there arrived one day messengers from the Pope bearing letters naming the former dean Bishop of Tolosa, permitting him at the same time to name whom he pleased to succeed him in his vacant see.

“When Don Ulan heard this he reminded him of his promise, urging him to confer the appointment on his son. But the archbishop again desired that he would allow him to name one of his paternal uncles to succeed him. Don Ulan replied, that, although he felt he was unjustly treated, still, relying on the future accomplishment of his promise, he should let it be. The archbishop thanked him again renewed his promise of future services and, inviting Don Ulan and his son to accompany him, they all set out for Tolosa, where they were well received by the counts and great men of the country.

“They had resided there about two years when messengers again came from the Pope with letters in which he announced to the archbishop that he had named him cardinal, allowing him, as before, to name his successor.

“On this occasion Don Ulan went to him, and again urging that many vacancies had taken place, to none of which he had named his son, so that now he could plead no excuse, and he hoped the cardinal would confer this last dignity on his son. But once more the cardinal requested Don Ulan would forgive his having bestowed the vacant see on one of his maternal uncles; saying he was a very good old man, and proposing they should now depart for Rome, where undoubtedly he would do for them all they could desire. Don Ulan complained very much; nevertheless, he consented to accompany the cardinal to Rome. On their arrival they were very well received by the other cardinals and the entire court, and they lived there a long time. Don Ulan daily importuned the cardinal to confer some appointment on his son, but he always found some excuse for not doing so.

“While they were yet at Rome, the pope died, and all the cardinals assembled in conclave elected our cardinal pope.

“Then Don Ulan came to him, saying, ‘You have now no excuse to offer for not fulfilling the promises you have hitherto made me.’

“But the new pope told him not to importune him so much, as there was still time to think of him and his son.

“Don Ulan now began to complain in earnest. ‘You have,’ said he, ‘made me very many promises, not one of which you have performed.’ He then recalled to his mind how earnestly he had pledged his word at their first interview to do all he could to help him, and never as yet had he done anything. ‘I have no longer any faith in your words,’ said Don Ulan, ‘nor do I now expect anything from you.’

“These expressions very much angered the pope, who replied, tartly, ‘If I am again annoyed in this manner I will have you thrown into prison as a heretic and a sorcerer, for I know well that in Toledo, where you lived, you had no other means of support but by practising the art of necromancy.’

“When Don Ulan saw how ill the pope had requited him for what he had done, he prepared to depart, the pope refusing to grant him wherewith to support himself on the road. ‘Then,’ said he to the pope, ‘since I have nothing to eat, I must fall back upon the partridges I ordered for tonight’s supper.’ He then called out to his housekeeper, and ordered her to cook the birds for his supper.

“No sooner had he spoken, than the dean found himself again in Toledo, still dean of Santiago, as on his arrival, but so overwhelmed with shame that he knew not what to say.

“‘How fortunate is it,’ said Don Ulan to him, ‘that I have thus proved the intrinsic value of your promises in prosperity; for, as it is, I should have considered it a great misfortune had I allowed you to partake of the partridges.’

“And you, Count Lucanor, will now see how you ought to act towards the man, who, desiring your assistance, is so ungrateful. Risk not too much on the chance of your services being repaid at some future time, or you may anticipate the reward Don Ulan received from the dean.”

The Count found this to be very good advice, acted upon it, and was benefited.

And Don Juan, thinking this to be a very good example, had it written in this book and composed these verses, which say as follows:

Who pays thy kindness with ungratefulness,
The more he has to give, he’ll give the less.

Thorn1, Plague Doctors, Web Help, BMI, eMusic

I got Thorn1′s “Drone” nominated for Music World Radio if you could help me vote it into the charts (no login, takes about a second, the track is in position 21) – here’s the link.

I saw silberspy/plague doctor masks twice in the media this week.  Once in the TV show Tower Prep & once in the movie Ink.  Kinda weird.

Did some work on populating the new banner through the Silber site.  Does anyone know how to make that whole portion of the site run through a style sheet so I never need to do these manual updates again?

Registered a bunch of songs on BMI.  I’m still confused how BMI works some times.  I know a lot of people who get a check every three months, but it’s only for $2.  I get a check only every couple of years, but it’s usually $100?  Maybe I set a payment threshold back in ancient times?

So there’s a kinda big news story about labels like Merge & Beggars Banquet abandoning eMusic somehow relating to eMusic starting to work with majors.  Allegedly because they are charging more & paying more per download for the majors.  It seems kind of retarded to me because I think people who prefer to use eMusic aren’t going to look for the music on a different site, they just won’t buy it.  I don’t know, I suppose they have more money than me, so maybe they have a better idea of what’s going on than me.

Music Placements, Digital Comics, Spinach, Thorn1, & Radio

I submitted some Vlor tracks for a film placement today.  I’m starting to notice a lot of places charging for music submission.  Fees to have an opportunity for film placement, fees for opportunities for reviews or radio play, fees to potentially get booked at festivals.  It seems a little predatory & reminds me of how things work in the poetry market where they have all these contests with submission fees, but maybe no one today is a professional poet (given that if you are a college professor, that is your primary profession).  Is this where the music industry is headed?

I talked with Nick Marino (Timelog, Super Haters) about some things with digital comics as he’s more on top of that than me.  His analysis is people are willing to spend $1 for a comic they can read on their phone, but unwilling to pay to read a digital comic in any other format.  I really should make my comics available for phones; but I don’t even have a phone with a camera, much less a smart phone.  But if anyone knows how to make the apps & is interested in helping me make some, let me know.

I made a new side dish for dinner that worked pretty well.  I put a bunch of spinach in a casserole dish & put some slices of colby jack on top to weigh it down.  Put it in an oven at 350 (Fahrenheit) for ten minutes while caramelizing an onion on the stove.  Put the caramelized onion (along with a lot of fresh cracked black pepper) on to of the cheese & put the dish back in the oven for ten more minutes.  Final result – yummy & earthy.

Finished the web-based emails for Thorn1, so all the promo is out there, just waiting to see what (if anything) happens.

I’m listening to KDVS for the first time in years.  I forgot what a great radio station they are.  I really should listen to the stations I like more often instead of sticking with the ones that happen to be local.

One Response to Music Placements, Digital Comics, Spinach, Thorn1, & Radio

  1. GoddakkAttack says:

headed? that’s where it’s been for years. even in the big leagues you have to pay the headliners to be the support act (which opened up a whole new meaning for that term for me as opposed to using “opening” act”) or to be on festivals rosters.

you should retool silber to catch up to the times mang.

Delusions of Adequacy, Dublab, Ear X-tacy

I got asked about writing a piece for Delusions of Adequacy today.  (Maybe buying an ad pays off?)  It’s just me writing about one of my favorite records, I’ll probably go for either a Hefner or Six by Seven record.

I wrote some bass parts potentially for either some comp requests for Remora or for the next Vlor record.  Hard to tell which yet….  I need to record them before I forget them.

Dublab asked me to make them a Silber packet for an auction thing they’re doing (they have 501-3c status (or whatever it is)).  I’ll let you know when it’s available.

I finished up sending out the Silber newsletter & the promo for the Thorn1 release (with the exception of webform-contacts, which are a headache & I guess I should start working on).

I saw this today & thought some of you might be interested.  It’s from Ear X-tacy in  Louisville.  They are one of the few dozen record stores that I really think deserve to be in business & are doing everything right.

SPACE, Website, & Dreams

Talked some with Bob Corby today about doing the digital anthology for SPACE again next year.  Turns out the indie digital comic company that was associated with it last year that were kind of a pain to work with have gone out of business.  I’m thinking of starting my own digital comic distro thing since I already have the technology to do digital sales.  I guess I’d need to figure out what would be a fair way to do it as far as me making money & the comic folks making money.  We’ll see if I’m still thinking about it in a couple months time.

Did some more work on the website.  Made some smaller versions of the images in the banner so it theoretically loads a little faster.  But for some reason it seems like it some times has the low-res text show up for a split second that I wouldn’t anticipate.  Thinking about taking out the low-res text….

Last Night’s Dreams:
Staring at cactus seedlings at night in shadows.  There’s an underlying vibe that a monster is in the room.

I’m on tour & I’m staying at Wim Lecluyse & Annelies Monsere’s house (which is odd since I haven’t met them in person, but it presumably means I’m in Belgium).  Their home phone rings & it’s for me.  It’s some girl who wants to know if I’ll be home to see her tonight & I’m trying to explain to her that I’m on tour & I’ll tell her I’m not sure when I’ll be home & she replies, “It’s so flattering that you’re admitting I’m your home now.”  I just tell her I’ve gotta go.  I’ve been wandering through the apartment as I’ve been talking on the phone & I’m in the kitchen & Annelies walks in & she says she wants to show me something.  She pulls a plug out of the sink & a milky white bubble starts to come up out of the drain.  She just says, “I think something’s alive down there.”

I’m on tour & I’m meeting Peter Aldrich in Asheville, so it must be 1999.  I meet him at some parking lot & he takes me out on the town & we go out on the town getting drinks & at the end of the night we can’t remember where my car is.  I probably shouldn’t be driving anyway.

Free music from Twelve, Built Mini-Comic, Nostalgia Equals Distortion, What It Is, & Thorn1

I used the time machine function over at Archive.org to get a few really old blog entries to post up here.  So now the blog goes all the way back to 2002.  I might be able to find some older stuff on my one old computer if I power it up.  I must admit it’s weird on some of the old entries how positive I was that adding the then much higher profile acts of Lycia, Rollerball, & Twelve would turn Silber into an indie juggernaut.  Maybe it has in a way, as it never stops.  I guess I need to look up the definition of juggernaut.

Doing some work on the website entering in recent reviews & populating the re-worked banner.  I really should start using a real CSS sheet for the banner so I don’t have to recode the whole site every time I alter it.  Anyone want to help me figure out how to do that?

I put a new mini-comics up for sale called Built.  It’s about a robot gaining sentience & escaping.  So, you know, autobiographical.

Been thinking lately about trying to make a bunch of ebook versions of both the comics & QRD.  I don’t know if there would really be any demand/interest or not.

I was a guest panelist for What It Is discussing musicians with thirty year long careers lat week & now you can check it out online -  http://tinyurl.com/37trc6p

Thorn1 got it’s first bit of press today having been listed on The Music Slut’s daily playlist.  I did another batch of the promotion wave for it.  I theoretically finish that tomorrow & then will send out the Silber newsletter with all the info.

New post on Nostalgia Equals Distortion from Ben Szporluk where he calls U2 a post-punk band.  Which I find interesting & I bet is true to when the record came out, even if now they just seem like a pop band.

Twelve (Chris Olley) just put up their third album for free download via bandcamp.

Left-Handed Guitar, Thorn1, Music Libraries, Blogs, & Dreams

I played guitar a bit today, but because I wanted to try to come up with some creative parts I tried playing it left-handed instead.  I’m thinking about borrowing one of my friend Darin’s left-handed guitars for a month to see what happens.

Uploaded Thorn1 for getting it on iTunes & all that.  I guess I should’ve done that quite a while ago as it takes six weeks to go up & so will only be available through Silber for that time.  Need to go ahead & put up the parts of the back catalog that aren’t up on it yet as well.

I got a bunch of the promo messages out today for Thorn1 & 30 Seconds of Time.  Looks like the first wave of promo on those I will finish by Tuesday.  We’ll see what happens as it does seem like not only has there’s been a decline in sales, but even a decline in interest from reviewers.  I like to think that’s not just with Silber.

Submitted Vlor for another music library.  I really feel like Vlor has a lot of potential for placements in film, but I haven’t caught my lightning in a bottle yet.

On all of my MySpace accounts I added a line to contact me via email.  Because I imagine that since I hate the redesign I am going to end up visiting it about as often as I do Reverbnation & Bebo & Hi5 & Orkut & such.

Spent most of the day working on this blog.  I put in all the entries from when the equivalent of a blog was the news page.  The blog started working funny now.  So who knows what is going on….

Last Night’s Dreams
Recording an album in an empty ranch house with a band for which I just play guitar.  I’m trying to put mics on my amp, but the amp I have is my Quantum (a 4 inch speaker) so it’s hard to get two positioned well.  Interestingly enough I have one of the mics going into a splitter with one channel out to record & the other into a volume pedal & feeding back into the amp.  I look at the other guitarist’s rig & he’s using one of those big Fender Twins.  I’m not going to be able to hear myself….

I’m working on an album that is a cappella duets recorded in my car.  It’s a great way to set up cheap dates with girls.  I’m not sure who the girl is in the car with me & I don’t know the word or melody to the song, but it is called “I Like Your Smile.”

I’m in a record store & I find a used copy of the second Bleak record that was supposedly lost when David Galas’s computer crashed in the 1990s.

France Supports Music, Chinese Support Shipping, Taylor Swift, If Thousands, Promotion, Blogging

Okay, I came across this thing in France today.  Basically the French government is trying to encourage legal downloading by paying half the price of downloads.  Interesting.  I wonder if the USA could afford to do that if they were willing to abandon the idea of being a global police force.  Just think if the entire budget spent on the military outside of US borders went to pay artists to stay alive.

While I’m talking about weird political stuff.  I’ve often wondered how places like Meritline & Deal Extreme can ship me things for under a dollar including shipping.  Well, I found out.  It ends up that the Chinese government subsidizes shipping on most items which explains a lot of why you can buy Chinese stuff so inexpensively despite it being shipped halfway across the world. Tania clay blog  can guide you more better on this.

So I (like everybody) am really surprised about Taylor Swift (or anybody for that matter) selling over a million copies of her album in a week.  But here’s an interesting bit, according to Soundscan (the company that tracks the sales numbers) only 5000 units were sold in indie music shops.  ~600,000 sold through Walmart/Target type places & ~350,000 digital downloads & I’m guessing the other 50,000 goes to Amazon & the like.  It would be really nice if indie stores took advantage of these kind of things & pulled people into their shops for it, but if I know the indie music shops they will only stock it by special order.  Me, maybe I’ll review her last album at Finally Checking It Out if I ever get around to it.

The woman (Jammie Thomas-Rasset) who has been in court about sharing Gloria Estefan & Guns N Roses on Kazaa just got out of court again.  A thirdd jury found she should pay almost 1.5 million dollars (the last one said 2 million & the first one said a couple hundred thousand) for damages.  I think years ago that the RIAA asked her to settle out of court for $2500 & her refusing that & insisting that she had the right to share the music & didn’t do anything wrong to me sounds like something worth her losing her house over.  But I suppose I am pretty extreme on protection of intellectual property.

This morning I spent thirty minutes trying to fill an order because I had a box mis-labeled & didn’t look into it (I’d stuck some copies of the first Hotel Hotel disc (allheroesareforeverbold) that I have on consignment from the band in a Heller Mason box).  But the good news is I found a few copies of the out of print Candice Recorder by If Thousands & you can buy them.

Did some work looking for more bloggers to add to the Silber promo list & got a few hundred more messages out promoting the Thorn1 release.

As I’ve been doing more looking into blogs & all this stuff, I’ve been thinking I should start a blog (or two) that is no exclusive original content & just a bunch of RSS feeds in from the couple hundred blogs I occasionally check out.  Anyone interested in helping me out with something like that?

Also I’d like to give a shout out to my friend Helen for helping out with trying to iron out some of the kinks on this new blog.  I think there is still some kind of an issue with the RSS (I don’t know how to use one, so I can’t even be sure), but we’re trying to work it out….

if the US gvt. did this, some banker will figure out how to make that download a commodity to trade on the markets and create a new “download bubble”. Besides, I thought you were right leaning and preferred less regulations

  2. GoddakkAttack says:

by regulations i meant govt. interference in business

  3. silberspy says:

Well, I am fundamentally against government involvement. But I’m even more against a third of my income going towards still maintaining military occupation in Germany & Japan 65 years later when it could be used better by either helping out local businesses or just leaving it in my pocket in the first place. There’s a fine line that I seem to keep treading as far as doing business practices that I feel are good & moral versus doing the business practices that can help me stay in business. This either trickles up or down to nations as well right now.

New Blog, Thorn1, Low Popularity

Okay, so as you’ve noticed at this point, the blog is no longer on MySpace.  There are kind of a lot of reasons why.  I didn’t like them fooling around with my html or not being able to sell stuff on it & I didn’t like that so many folks were never going to MySpace these days.  Then a couple days ago they killed groups & forums & my blog stopped storing more than a single sentence.  So here we are & now I’ll be like everyone else & look at MySpace as at the same value as Friendster.  I don’t know.  When I think about it, it’s been a couple years since someone contacted me about booking a show through MySpace, so I guess I’m just waiting for the next big thing in music like everyone else.  But I did successfully import the old blog & so I feel pretty excited about that.  Still trying to figure out how to get this one to look exactly like I want as I don’t really know how to work as I’ve only the most rudimentary html skills & don’t know anything about WordPress….

So the big news today is Thorn1’s So Far As Fast is available (wow, does this table look ugly in WordPress!):

Thorn1 - So Far as Fast Thorn1 – So Far As Fast
MP3 Album 2010 | Silber 091
11 tracks, 55 minutes
$5 (download only (256 kbps, ~92 megs))

Thorn1 hails from Russia & on their debut album they embrace the winter with blankets of guitar drone following in the tradition of Aarktica & Remora while painting emotional & musical maps of hope & solitude.

: Press release
: Reviews
: Listen to the track Drone

I started running the promo campaign for Thorn1 & 30 Seconds of Time & QRD #44 (500 emails done, 4000 to go).  We’ll see what happens.

So according to Alexa the Silber web traffic is down lately from millionth most popular website to three millionth most popular website.  I think it might actually be from me canceling the Google Adwords for The Wet Teens.  I don’t know if 1000 visitors a month really makes that difference, but maybe it does? Or maybe because I haven’t had a new release to push in six months….

Erasing Blogs, Thorn1, Monthly, Dreams

Okay, yesterday’s blog (on MySpace) got mostly erased evidently (only the first sentence appeared).  The same thing happened today.  So now I’m trying to convert over the blog to on the Silber site.  We’ll see if it works out.

The Thorn1 release is almost ready to go. I got a first draft done of the press release. Did some things for the website. Hopefully it will be finished tomorrow. & I’ll start some promo for it.

Did a final draft for the new comic Monthly & sent it to the artist.

Did some research for some more review sites for the Silber promo list & some more labels to contact for the label owner interview series.

Last Night’s Dreams
I must be about 20 years old based on how I feel about women. There’s a girl I keep seeing every time I walk to the post office to the point where I know not saying anything to her is being rude, but I really have nothing to say to her or anyone for that matter.

I can see the mushroom cloud from my window. I need to figure out time travel right now. My only future lies in my past.
