Semi-Productive Day.

Finally got my first drafts of the Carta & Sarah June press releases done.  Sent them to the bands for review.  Both of them are interesting to me because they are more biographical & less about the albums than most of the press releases I do (I work with material the bands provide as important).  This makes them less easy to do reviews of without hearing the records & I’m curious if it will result in less reviews.  We’ll see what happens.

Did some research today on some more blogs to service.  One day I’m going to have to get some interns to go through to see what blogs are still active as I know that there are a ton of seemingly awesome blogs that only last two months.

I got a pair of sci-fi sunglasses I ordered today.  Unfortunately they look like over-sized doggles when I actually put them on.  I’ve never had sunglasses that I think look right on me.  I hope I never need real glasses as I’m sure I’d have the same problem.

The Sarah June covers came in today.  Which means I need to start assembling them.  I hadn’t realized how much quicker a disc would come if I did the assembling myself, but it takes a couple weeks off the time.  So that’s pretty sweet.  It also means that pre-orders will start shipping soon.

I’ve been thinking about the future of downloaded music quite a bit lately.  A bunch of states (including mine) are trying to start collecting sales taxes on digital music.  They’re trying to say that the internet is in-state commerce rather than out of state (like mailorder would be) & therefore not exempt from sales tax.  Of course part of the question could also be is if digital distribution is a service you pay for (not-taxable in some states) or a physical item.  But I think what this kind of headache is going to lead to is the rise of some of the subscription services that places like Napster & Rhapsody do (of course it would be done through all of the major players just as a means to bypass all the paperwork associated with 50 different types of sales taxes to apply) & the problem is those places literally pay pennies.  Then again maybe iTunes would move its home servers to another country to avoid the problems (just like happened in the 1990s with the file traders).  I don’t know, maybe it is time for the Feds to start collecting sales tax on interstate commerce.  It might be able to help the deficit as well as alleviate a business headache that would be insurmountable to someone like me (a lot of states charge either for an initial business license or annually to the tune of about $50).  We’ll see what happens.

Since re-loading Windows in my laptop with the hard drive repair, the battery no longer seems to charge.  I know it only held a fifteen minute charge before (it’s more than five years old), but it seems like a strange coincidence that it would crap out at the exact same time.  Probably not worth $100 for a new battery at this point in my computer’s life.  Though I would like to think it can live forever.

I had a dream last night about performing in the original version of Vlor when I was just a singer (I owned a guitar but didn’t play it well, what’s changed?).  It was a pretty weird vibe where it seemed like the band might break up in the middle of the performance.  Also I think three of the members of the band I didn’t know.  I need to clear my mind from my recent wave of nostalgia or learn how to really operate my brain properly for time travel.

Scripts Written/Life in the Way

Got the final versions of Marked #2 & Worms #6 scripts off to the artists.

Contacted “the guy” about my digital shop issues, hopefully it’ll be fixed or figured out in the next day or two.

Heard back from the artist for the Mecha comic, & he abandoned it half way through for a paying gig, but hopes to finish it in a couple weeks.  I wish I could make money on the comics so I could pay people to do them.

I wrote this little vocal song I want to try to get some collaborators for.  If you have the ability to record yourself singing on a computer in a multi-track software let me know.  It’ll be something under a minute.  It’s called “Funeral Anthem” & is supposed to be Andrew WK anthem style about a peaceful death.

Developed a mini-comic idea with my nephew today.  It’s about a robot that plays football, but doesn’t want to.  Anyone interested in drawing this?

I feel tired & way behind.  If I could have a week off of my “real life” to work on Silber I would be able to catch up, but we all have our responsibilities.  Once I get the press kits done for the three new releases & the promos sent out & make the new postcards & get the digital shop set up & the first batch of digital releases done & the QRD interviews rolling, I’ll probably be wondering what to do with my spare time.

I’m working on an anthology for SPACE (the indie comic convention in Columbus in April) & I don’t know when I’m supposed to get it done.

I had a dream where I was hanging out with Jessica Bailiff & she was wearing pants that had the same print on them as my grandmother’s sheets (look like faded floral wallpaper).  Now that one I really can’t figure out what it’s supposed to mean.  Within the context of the dream I was trying to remember if I’ve ever seen her not wearing jeans?  Maybe they were pajama pants or something….

Nostalgia

So it seems like there’s a problem with my digital download store.  So I’m doing the links by hand for now with orders, but hopefully that will be repaired in the next few days.  Which is exactly why I’m running the test before doing the digital only releases.

Got an email that work is under way for the art for my new comic Epic.  Fingers crossed on it coming to fruition.  The first issue is always the hardest.

I went through a few hundred photos looking for Rivulets photos from 2001 to use with the Demos release we’ll be doing as digital only.  I found about 4 that seemed of possible use.  It did give me some weird nostalgia feelings seeing all the photos from the 1990s.

In another bit of nostalgia I saw Russell Halasz (the original guitarist for Vlor from the 1990s) who I haven’t seen since 1998 or talked to since 2000.  He had an infant & a wife. I didn’t go to talk to him.  It made me feel like a failure as a human.  I guess because humans are meant to make new humans more so than to make new music.  I often wonder if he googles his name & sees his work is now available for free & that the Vlor name is still in use.

I got a physical zine from David Carter called Pins & Cathedral Bells (which I assume is a sequel to his zine Pindrops & Cathedral Bells from the 1990s). Its really good with lots of Q&A interviews.  Pretty much the zine I used to do & would do again given infinite funds.  The digital version of QRD is a compromised based on economics & public demand.

It’s probably just today’s nostalgia, but I’ve grown really fond of things that decay & don’t last & become memories.  Digital media seems a little to accessible & unbending to memory.  It’s too easy for something I remember fondly to be proven to be crap (whether it’s my creation or someone else’s).  I like the idea that something exists temporarily in time to be distilled by memory.  When I remember Saturday Night Fever I can only remember the guy that leaves the priesthood & the guy who kills himself because his girlfriend is pregnant, but when I re-watch it there’s only dancing.  The memory is better than the truth.  If it was wiped off the earth to re-watch, my memory of a good movie could become perceived as more accurate.  Maybe this is part of my interest in derivative works over the past 15 years.  I want to tell stories or play songs focusing on what I see as important & discarding things that get in the way.  Maybe I’ll eventually gain the skill & time to really do a good job of re-telling these stories in a way where other people can take them & make their own stories & eventually make a circle back to the original work.

Digital Downloads, Vlor for $1, Intern Help?

So today I put up the first Silber digital sales on the front page.  They’re encoded at 256 & you buy them with Paypal & get emailed a download link to a zip file.  The first two releases available are Aarktica’s In Sea & Vlor’s Six-Winged.  For a limited time Six-Winged is available to download for just $1!   Normal price is $5, but I want to encourage some people to try the service so I can get any kinks worked out (& since Vlor is more or less my music I can not feel like I’m devaluing someone else’s music).  So I hope you can check it out.  I’m coming around to the idea that people do own too much physical stuff & offering downloads is a good way to go.  So let me know what you think of it.

I finished the second drafts of Worms #6 & Marked #2 today.

Sent out the emails for record stores about the upcoming releases.  A lot of the emails bounced back (maybe the stores are closed or maybe they just changed their email addresses).  Anyone interested in spending a couple hours doing some intern work looking at websites for record stores?  Let me know if you are – silberspy@silbermedia.com

I went to a few different labels websites & I think I’m going to redesign the front page.  Put in my Twitter feed & a couple of other things.  Maybe I’ll work on it tomorrow.

The Sarah June discs are supposed to come in on Monday & Aarktica’s In Sea Remixes at the end of the week, so I need to get myself geared up for sending out my 200 promos.

I’m feeling good right now, but I’m not really sure exactly why.  For some reason I think things are on the upswing.

Last Night’s Dream:
Drinking a lot of beers with Archie Bunker & I pass out on the couch while he passes out in the chair.  I wake up in the morning & Archie’s dead & I need to break it to Edith.  Strangely his daughter isn’t around for things, but his son-in-law is.  WTF?

Don’t Call it a Come Back

Alright, my computer is back online in a semi-functional state (hard drive problem, which probably means it will crash again in the next week or two, but I’m getting a replacement drive so things should be better than ever after that).

A lot of things happened in my time away from the internet/blog.  So I’ll try to skip to some highlights:

Michael Gira (Angels of Light/Swans) has a new demos album available.  I think I preferred his last two demo albums to the actual albums, so you might want to check it out as it’s limited to 1000 for sale to finance recording of the album.

I wrote Worms #6′s first draft.

I wrote Marked #2′s first draft.

Got out the royalty checks to the artists on Silber.

Fixed my computer on my own.

A lot of stuff to do as I’m now officially a week behind on getting ready for the Carta & Aarktica releases (which means the press kits aren’t finished & I haven’t done my second wave of solicitations to stores & distros).

A bunch of new reviews came out recently.  Including an Aarktica one from Side-Line that for some reason was picked up by USA Today as a band you’d like if you like U2.

Got about 60-70 emails I need to answer (I answered the non-in-depth ones already).

Melissa Gardner says XO #6′s artwork is done.  Looking forward to it coming out so I can write the next issue as I have had some things happen lately that gave me ideas for new issues.

Computer Problems

So my laptop (which is my business & internet computer rather than my music making computer) is down.  Getting a blue screen with an error message (which I have heard happens on PCs “all the time”, but had never personally seen in over 25 years of using PCs).  I think I have all the data retrieved (though my back log of emails that need to be answered might be gone), but I’m still working on getting it fixed (trading repair time for teaching some music mastering/engineering skills).  I’m hoping to get it repaired without needing to go through re-installing all my softwares, but I’m not sure it can happen (the suspect is a bad hard drive, which I guess happens plenty when a computer turns 7 like mine has).  So that’s why I have been out of touch with folks the past few days.  Hopefully it will be back up by next weekend.  I probably won’t do another blog until it is up & running as my internet time is now limited.

Pedal Help

Got some more work done on the artists trading card project.  About 20 folks allegedly contributing, we’ll see what happens.  If it works out I’ll try to make a non-profit about it & get some grants.

Started the first draft of Worms #6.  Hopefully more serious work on it tomorrow.

Got some preliminary photos for the Vlor “Watch Me Bleed” music video.  My fingers are crossed on it being awesome & well received.

I’ve got a musical equipment question for you all.  As some of you might know I have a pet peeve that the stomps on things like Rats & most true bypass switches have an audible click when you step on them.  I’m not talking about within the signal path, but the actual noise of stepping on the mechanism.  Does anyone know a cure for this?  I was thinking if I put rubber washers so the mechanism isn’t touching the rest of the box it would be less loud.  My dad suggested putting some styrofoam in the empty portion of the pedal to help absorb the noise.  Has anyone done any experiments with this or had any luck with anything to make it not sound like a stray drum hit when they cut on a pedal?

Artist Trading Cards

Today’s main project was working on stuff for the Silber Artist Trading Card Project.  I sent out emails to a bunch of folks & went through Ebay finding folks to contact who might be interested in contributing.  So we’ll see what all happens with it.  I am pretty optimistic about this as me being able to do something that I find fun & exciting that utilizes skills I have.  Please help spread the word to potential contributors.

I cleared out a bunch of Silber MP3s from my computer as it seems like to sell them I need them at higher quality than I had them saved at anyway.  I can’t tell if my computer is performing better or not for having 5 gigs of free space instead of 1 gig.

Going to try again at getting the digital store working before sleep.

I was sent a link today that seems to be a guy who offers residencies by just letting artists stay at his house for a week to work.  Kind of an interesting idea.  But also potentially creepy.

Trombone, Press, Comics

I got the final draft of Cops & Crooks off to Eric & Jason to draw.

My show this coming Monday is not only listed as a pick in the weekly, but has a write up as well.  We’ll see what attendance is like.

I finally watched this beginners’ horns DVD I bought almost a year ago.  They have a practice exercise of putting a piece of paper on the wall at arms length & blowing on it to hold it there & I couldn’t do it for even a tenth of a second.  Maybe I’m even more out of shape than I thought.  The trumpet lesson didn’t really do anything to help me (I am beginning to think there’s a real possibility of it being caused by how beat up my trumpet is), but I do feel like my trombone playing was improved as I never really even knew how to hold the thing much less where the positions were for making the different notes.  So it makes playing the trombone much more pleasing to play now & I might bring it back into the Small Life Form show, even if it is a bit harder to play with the way I normally have my microphones set up for that show.

I’ve gotten contacted by a couple labels lately about doing one-off albums & I had planned on doing a bunch of stuff like that, so I really need to start recording again.

Tried to get things set-up for the digital store yesterday, but an internet problem prevented it from happening.  Maybe today it will happen.

Dream
Trying to go back to 1999 to get myself to invest in better musical equipment & start touring more heavily, but instead ending up in 1990 & going back to high school.  I always new I would fuck up doing time travel.

mwvm/sarah june/aarktica/cops & crooks

Those of you who haven’t been to mwvm’s myspace page in a while, there’s a bunch of new songs up on there.

Went through answering  ton of emails from reviewers & such & there are a few more reviews now.  I’ll post them soon.

I put up the ability to pre-order Sarah June & Carta on the Silber front page.  I still have to make their artist pages & write up their promo sheets.  But there are sound samples that work.

Sent off solicitations to the distros about the Sarah June, Carta, & Aarktica releases actually in the timing that I should.  Of course the question is if the distros will bother to do early solicitations to stores or not.  Who knows.

I talked to Jon DeRosa (Aarktica) & we’re probably going to be making some of his out of print catalog available as digital only over the next couple of months.

Talked to Sarah June & she’s planning on doing a series of videos for her album, so it’ll be cool to see if that promotional tool helps as none of the other bands on the label have really tried to push that angle hard so far.

I wrote my second draft of my new comic Cops & Crooks & I’ll hopefully get a final draft off to the artists tomorrow.  Still need to write up Just A Man #4, Worms #6, & Marked #2 (not to mention (R)evolution #1).
