Social Networks, Redwoods, Remora, Dreams

I was looking into some social networking stuff & unbelievably Orkut now has better traffic rankings than MySpace.  Also Orkut has twice as many users as Google+.  So I went on Orkut & just like three years ago when I was last on it, I can’t figure out how anyone uses it for anything.  I also looked at the Yahoo Groups & Google Groups thinking about posting to them about the new releases & realized how they are totally dead.

So I got a second draft of the Redwoods comic done & sent it to Jason Young a long with a couple possible physical format size options for the drawings.  So in a couple of months it might be realized.  He’s working on three comics right now of his own, so they’re could be delays for sure.  I’m pretty happy with the script as far as it combining weird elements of sci-fi, eco terrorism, superiority complexes, & religion all in less than twenty sentences.

The Remora set seemed okay last night.  I’ll see if the video turned out okay & post it up if so.

Last Night’s Dream:
I’m a bishop at a bishop’s conference & for some reason it’s been arranged for Low to play for the Pope.  I’m setting up wooden folding chairs for the event & some guy is saying he can’t believe I was made a bishop with how much I swear & I walk over to him & say, “Shut the fuck up.”

Google+, Facebook, Remora, Redwoods

So I made a Silber page over on Google+ for those of you on that network.  Not sure how often it will be updated.  Is G+ an officially dead system already?  Interestingly, in what I assume is a move to push Google+, YouTube disabled their friends feature this week.  Of course I don’t know how many people were using that anyway so it probably doesn’t make too big of a difference.

On Facebook I decided to go through & add as friends the folks who I have a couple dozen friends with.  I asked to add maybe 100 folks in the category & then Facebook accused me of spamming or whatever.  I don’t know, I’m kind of pissed off at Facebook right now, because they won’t let me do anything useful on the Silber page because all I want it to do is import the blog RSS (now a blocked feature) & the Twitter feed (only lets me connect to my personal account?).  At least I never liked them to begin with.  Anyway, I did end up friending a band from Italy that I will probably open for in a couple of months, so that’s positive.  Also I got an email from Facebook today accusing me of posting “illegal or inappropriate content” which I guess was about today I went to deposit some cash at the ATM & It gave me one of my bills that looks brand new back as unrecognizable, which I assume means it’s counterfeit & a friend of mine did a deposit a while back at the counter & had a counterfeit bill & they took it from  him & destroyed it so he was out the money.  So I posted a story about getting the bill back to spend somewhere.  Which to me is kinda funny.  Whatever, I should spend less time on that site than I do anyway.

The Remora practice today went okay.  Pretty confident of the set with the exception of I hear the club is about to close & no longer has a PA & I sing so my vocals will be in the same amp I use for bass & violin.

I wrote the first draft of the Redwoods script today.  Might get it typed up & out to Jason Young tomorrow.

Hey Brian, what’s the name of the Italian band? (just in case you can disclose it)

  2. letsDRONE says:

Ah thank you, I’ll check them out. Will you open for them in Italy? It was not clear from your post – just in case, please come to Sicily! ;)

  3. Lullabier says:

If you’ll plan an EU tour, I could give you couple of contacts for Italian gigs

    • Well, the thing is I don’t want to need to deal with figuring out transportation or routing or trying to track down equipment to borrow or what place has vegetarian food or any of that. I just want to show up & play for thirty days & go home with the amount of money I spent on the plane ticket….

  4. Lullabier says:

Well, I’d like to do the same soon or later in the US…except that it would be fine for me a place which has a simple cheeseburger…

Cerebus, Remora, Dream

I’m not really in a good mood & I don’t want to bring anyone else down, so instead here’s a little video I made for Cerebus TV & a little thing of me playing guitar.

Last Night’s Dream:
I’m in a cave that by the color of the red rock I assume is in the north american southwest.  The cave is an entrance to a hollow earth culture that is much more advance than ours, but has developed based on agriculture technology instead of weapons technology & everything they have from vehicles to computers to homes are alive.

Remora, Redwoods, Facebook, Donations, & Dreams

Practiced some today for getting ready for the Remora show on Saturday.  Played bass instead of guitar for all the songs to try to beat up my fingers a little more & get them back up to snuff for the show (or at least as good as I get).  Only a 30 minute set, which is good to know & I should be able to pull it off easily enough without embarrassing myself despite not having only done one intentional solo show in 2011.

I got out the promo emails to places about the Remora video.  It’s interesting that I started my database for video promotion only 18 months ago & already 10% of the sites are gone & I imagine at least another 10% mostly defunct & 50% not actually useful.  I guess I’ll just wait & see if anything happens.  The video has gotten 40 more views (according to YouTube, but I don’t know if I trust there numbers as I here they may not count embedded views like when I post something in the blog or on Facebook which probably counts for half the views I might get for a video) listed since I sent out the email newsletter.

I added these little Facebook & Twitter follow things on the right column in the blog.  Thanks to Christopher Maples for his help on that.  So if you are on Facebook or Twitter & not following already, just click it.  In other Facebook news, Facebook stopped pulling in my blog posts for some reason a couple of weeks ago & I wasn’t aware of it.

I’ve been talking to Jason Young about doing a new comic tentatively titled “Redwoods” that’s a derivative work from a single line in an issue of Cerebus.  It’s about when trees ruled the earth & more or less destroyed it with nuclear bombs.  Been doing some research for it actually to make it as close to canonical to Cerebus as I can.  The back story is that intelligent redwoods detonated a bomb that causes a flood to wipe out civilization (starting with their own) every 12,000 years.  So my idea is that the first issue will be about designing the weapon & it being seen as a weapon of peace & protection & salvation rather than destruction (because weapons are almost always created with the idea in mind of protecting either an individual or a country).  I don’t even have in mind yet whether or not it is a one-shot or maybe an ongoing thing.

I got an email from a fan today thanking me for all the free content followed by a donation that covers almost an entire year of my webhosting.  It feels pretty great when something like that happens.  I think the thank you note is actually more powerful than the donation in the end.  That said I’m always willing to take in some money to help keep Silber rolling.  We’re actually running a little into the red this year (I haven’t kept my paperwork up to date enough to give an exact number, but we’ll probably be down by $1000 from the start of the year in part due to me catching the Small Life Form amp on fire ($200) & in part due to me going ahead & doing a physical release of the Remora even though I know physicals are on the way out & that the Remora albums have never sold well (which makes sense since in a certain way they get half the promotion of any other release as they only get what I do for every release & not the bonus of what band members do for a release)) & usually things are slightly in the black.  So if anyone has any ideas for me doing special discounted sales to try to generate an end of year sales spike, let me know.  My ideas are up at the sale page & the only thing I can think to add is a special where you get 50 mini-comics for $25 (presuming I can get one more mini done fairly soon as I only have 49).

Last Night’s Dreams (clearly about loneliness & alienation):
I’m at church in a line that you’d think would be for communion, but is actually for anointing with oil before death.  Which I assume mean the end of the world is about to happen.  When I get up to the priest, he fakes putting the oil cross on my forehead, not actually blessing me.  & instead of saying the little prayer he says, “Go, just go.”  & I leave the church starting to sweat & not understanding what is going on.

A friend of mine asks me to go out with her & a group of her friends to a bar.  I tell her I don’t really want to go & she asks me why not & I tell her I just can’t deal with social situations where my roll is not clearly defined.  She asks if my favorite Muppet was Doctor Honeydew.  (For the record my favorite Muppet is Fozzie Bear.)

  1. GoddakkAttack says:

    you should get a bassVI.

    • I probably should. But I’m lately not playing often enough to justify it & I don’t have any particular song ideas or recordings in mind that require it. Meanwhile I am thinking about a metal dobro because I do have some recording ideas that might require that. (I hear when you get a metal one that they are designed for single note playing & chords don’t blend together the way they do with a wooden body so the way I play with a heavy right hand hitting all six strings might sound interesting, but I’ve never even seen one except on the internet so I haven’t checked it out.)

      • GoddakkAttack says:

you’d play everything you’d play on guitar on the VI except it will be thicker and more bowelvacating inducing.

Blogs, Nudity, Art, Remora, Dream

So today I finished going through the Hype Machine bloggers.  One thing I noticed that a lot of bloggers do now that I don’t quite get is having random “funny” pictures of naked girls in a blog entry.  Like a naked girl skateboarding & then it talks about the new Bon Iver or whatever.  At first I thought, “Wow, a lot of indie rockers are putting naked girls on their album covers these days,” but I guess there’s just a whole genre of blogs that shows naked pictures like that.

Speaking of naked girls, yesterday I met this guy on the art walk that seemed like a normal dude, but then his thing is putting paint on naked chicks & taking pictures of it & he gets girls to do this for free somehow.  WTF?  I am still trying to piece together in my head if the guy really does that thinking it’s art or it’s a way he could come up with to take pictures of naked chicks.

I got out a few hundred more promo emails about the new releases to bloggers & radio.  We’ll see if any buzz comes.  Still need to do the specialized promos (to the metal folks for the Magi & for video folks about the Remora video & all the people I need to use web contact forms for instead of just an email).  We’ll see if any of it makes a difference for anything.

I booked a Remora Christmas show for this Saturday in Greensboro.  Trying to figure out exactly what to do for the set.  I think for a Christmas song I might do “Children of God” (Swans).  At any rate, I probably should play my guitar a bit to get ready.

Last Night’s Dream
I’m on one of those cooking competition shows & I’m in a grocery store trying to buy supplies to make some kind of corn & black bean muffin & I can’t find any of the ingredients I need & I start to have a nervous break down.  In the end I don’t even try to cook anything & turn in an empty plate & it seems like some kind of political statement though I have no idea what I’m trying to say.

  2. So this blog entry got some links to it presumably for having the word “nudity” in the subject line. So I guess probably the bloggers do get extra traffic for using naked pictures….

Stats & the Future

So I downloaded my webstats & it’s interesting to me.  On the new Christmas comp about 1000 people went to the page, but only 50 people downloaded the zip & the rest just streamed the audio.  Which I think just goes to show that downloading is on the way out which is something I’ve thought for a while.  It’s disconcerting because I don’t know what to do if the business model is going to be changing this much & this fast since I’m still trying to modify my 1995 business plan instead of starting from scratch in the year 2011.

The art show went alright today.  About 40 people came in & I sold ten comics.  It’s weird to me though the amount of people who look at te comics & say, “These are so cool,” & then pick one up & read it & don’t buy any.  Are they saying they’re cool just to be polite or does the actual content turn them off?  I mean, I’m selling them for a dollar & there’s 50 different ones.  Of course the thing with most art things I’ve been to in the past few years is the big sellers are jewelry & pottery.  I’m told by people doing paintings that sales have been pretty bad for about five years now, which is disconcerting.

with so many people online all the time, there’s no real good way to convince them to a.)buy or b.) download.

Also from my experience…most people are still finding new music and sharing it via youtube. which i find weird conceptually but i guess it’s more of the one stop shopping…. videos and/or music and bootlegs etc. . . all in one place.

  2. GoddakkAttack says:

also, so many people i know are hopping on the spotify bandwagon (free version of course).

Toolbar, Hype Machine, Promo, Eleven

So Alexa has this toolbar making thing.  I’m curious if anyone thinks I should bother to make one.  I posted about it on Twitter & Facebook yesterday to absolutely no response.  I think the time of doing a toolbar as a neat thing might be pretty 2002.

Still working through the blogger list from Hype Machine to find new contacts.  Probably half way through.  I’m thinking about making a Silber version of Hype Machine (meaning I pick the involved blogs), if anyone knows how to make an html page that would list entries from a few hundred RSS feeds let me know.

Got out another 900 promo emails out today (my host caps me at 1000 emails a day).  So about two more days of sending those out & then a couple days cutting & pasting for all the folks I have to use web contact forms for.  I’m not sure if it’s worth the time, but what else am I doing with my time these days.

I was taking care of my niece & nephew tonight & for a bed time story I read my 11 year old nephew a book version of La Jetee.  It’s weird to me not so much because that might be a freaky story for a kid so much as my parents stopped reading to me years before I knew how to read & I wonder if my nephew is being coddled.  Maybe different folks need different things though & I guess me reading a book to him might make him feel safe & stable since his life situation is pretty unstable because his parents are split up & seem to change rules on him every couple weeks & he’s getting in fights at school & all that.  It’s weird to when I think of when I was 11 & how like him I still occasionally played with toys & such, but I was shifting from being into comics to being into music (he’s more into video games than music, which I guess is the way it is these days) & I’d already gotten into alcohol with my friend down the street & would soon be getting into girls & meth.  Shoot, I was his age when I met the girl who I would be in an on-again-off-again relationship for over twenty years.  So I kinda feel like he’s a child, but when I was his age I was already more or less who I am today which I’m sure is a totally inaccurate thought (maybe by 13 though I was who I am…).

One Response to Toolbar, Hype Machine, Promo, Eleven

  1. Yeah, the fascination with YouTube is weird to me because I see all these articles about “if you are a musician you should try to become a successful YouTuber to make more money,” while I think the truth is closer to “if you are a successful YouTuber you should think about becoming a musician to make more money.” That said, YouTube is where I go if I want to hear a song from when I was a kid even if I have it on CD somewhere (I still haven’t put things on a computer/MP3 player & I haven’t put my CDs back in order since someone put them in random order 4 years ago). But I haven’t been able to secure 100 views per video I put on there so the idea of it being a place to generate interest (much less sales) seems a long shot. I’m pretty stoked with the Guns & Knives video & hopefully it’ll be able to get some views without me paying for it (like I did for the Vlor video).

Blogging, mini-comics, Terminator, Contact, Death Note

So I was realizing today that I’ve let this blog get really far removed from my personality & become just a list of tasks like a freelance worker would turn in to get payment, so I’m going to try to interject more thoughts on here.

So this morning I got up & my comic display had fallen over dumping comics everywhere.  So evidently it’s not quite as sturdy as I planned.  Tried to re-work it a bit & I guess I’ll find out Sunday if it can survive a show.

Most of my time today was spent on the tedious task of assembling mini-comics (I completed all I need for the display to look alright, pretty stoked about that) & going through blogs to contact for promo (I think I need to start getting more images associated with when a release comes out, maybe require bands to do two visually interesting band photos with a release so they are more likely to be featured).  So while I was doing this stuff I saw Terminator Salvation was on which I saw a couple years ago & liked fine so I had it playing.  Wow, it is a different experience that I had.  What I’d watched was a splotchy looking rough cut which only took up a fourth of my computer screen & it seemed fine.  In HD on a decent size TV with the finalized special effects I could see why people complained about this movie as it was a little bit blockbustery action movie instead of a sci-fi movie (the giant robot Transformer scene wasn’t in the version I saw & I’d guess it had 15-20 minutes of footage not in it).  Even odder was it had a totally different ending.  The ending I saw previously had John Connor die & Marcus alter his face to look like John Connor & replace him because he was so important to the resistance, but today Marcus gave up his heart to John for a heart transplant.

I started sending out the promo emails about the new digital releases today.  I got a nice message back from one of the reviewers about appreciating all the work I do, which was really nice.  It feels like I’m working on things more than ever to get less & less notice.  My buddy Nick Marino was talking a bit about it in the context of web comics on his Sequential Underground Podcast.  How it feels like no one cares because no one responds to anything anymore because the way the internet works has changed & interaction has lowered.  Which I feel is true & I think in a way the internet has jumped the shark a bit as a social tool because of the volume of noise.  The days of me & Jon DeRosa (Aarktica) sending each other several two-page emails a day about music certainly have come & gone & I can’t remember the last time I got a page long email & the depth of communication it used to allow seems to be gone.  Of course I suppose part of that is we used to need to pay by the minute for long distance phone calls & now we can just call & discuss things seemingly for free.  It’s weird because I feel I used to have dozens of friends/piers that I would be in touch with on a nearly daily basis via email & now I only get a real letter via email every week or two.

I started reading this manga comic called Death Note about a kid gaining the ability to kill by writing names down in a demon’s book & he uses it to try to make the world a better place.  It reminds me of the legends that King Solomon captured the demon Asmodeus & kept him as a slave & forced him to build the temple in Jerusalem.

HTML & Comics & Newsletters

Got a bunch of tedious web update stuff done associated with the four new free releases.  I’m still not sure how I feel about the new WYSIWYG software I’ve been using to help with web-editing (Seamonkey Kompozer) as it seems to want to put in a bunch of extraneous code & leave in some remnants of code when I delete things.  I guess it just takes getting used to the limitations.

I’m trying to get a bunch of comics assembled for the art show this Sunday.  I have 50 comics now, which is kind of crazy to me.  Plus I have about another 10 that are waiting on the art to come in (sometimes from me).

I did get the monthly newsletter done & mailed out to people on the mailing list & then tomorrow I guess I’ll start mailing reviewers & such about the four free releases.

Magi, Remora, Videos, Free Stuff, Dreams

More coming to fruition today than in a long time.

First off, let me introduce you to Magi.  A new project of doomgazing instrumental music from Brandon Helms (From Oceans to Autumn) that musically is somewhere between Tribes of Neurot & Neil Young’s Dead Man SoundtrackHere’s their free EP December.

Remora’s My Brother’s Guns & Knives remix EP is up.  I’m really happy with how different all the tracks are from each other as I was scared listening to a bunch of versions of one song would test patience.

I just got in this video for the Remora’s “12 String Guitar Song.”

Last Night’s Dream:
I’m back in high school because I never actually graduated twenty years ago.  Trying to listen to teachers as an adult is just impossible so I just leave the english class & go & sit by myself in an empty wood shop.

It reminds me of some Stan Brakhage’s video. Nice video, btw.

  3. I’m glad you dig the video. It’s nice to have someone make a video without me soliciting for it. It’s weird to hear that song for me as I haven’t listened to the recording of it in probably five years or more & that it’s still important to someone is interesting.
