Today is a day

I have about twelve panels left to draw for Lost Kisses #8.  I need to still finish writing #9 & #10 & lay them out.  I’m starting to be concerned from things I’ve heard that the state might not mail me the money for the DVD project in a timely manner.

I’m fairly well caught up on my emails & have heard a little follow up back & it’s bizarre to me that places are just now covering discs that are six months old.  I mean, I guess the Silber stuff is far enough underground that it can be reviewed at any time & the late reviews might remind some folks, but wow does that sound late.

Started working on the pre-mixing of the small life form versus slicnaton stuff.  I really need to dump stuff off of my hard drive so that my computer doesn’t have such a hard time working on it.

I received the first mix of the final song I’ve been waiting for on Vlor.  I’m still thinking about changing some things on it because it has male & female vocals & the male voice is really punky & the female voice border towards ethereal & I’m not sure if some eq-ing could get them to mesh together a bit more.

Below are the answers to a little survey I was sent about cover songs.  I know it’s clearly fishing for work by a company that does clearance work.

1. Do you record covers of famous songs?
Mainly for themed compilations or so re-worked that they’re legally considered derivative works.

2. What percentage of your recorded music are covers?
Maybe 2%

3. What percentage of your music played in live gigs are covers?
Probably 10%, one per show.

4. Do you use samples in your music?
Only of myself.

5. What percentage of your recorded music contain samples?
75%, I’m a looper.

6. What percentage of your music played live (gigs) contain recorded samples?
95%, once again, original loops/samples.

7. Are doing covers interesting to you and/or fit with the band’s goals?
Yeah, I want to give people a good time & my covers are so ridiculous that they seem witty.

8. Do you think that doing covers appropriate to your band’s style/vibe is a way to reach new music costumers – (e.g., digital downloads)?
Probably, but it’s more fun to do inappropriate ones.

9. Do you think there’s money to be made (say, on iTunes) by doing covers?
Definitely.

10. Do you think that selling your covers on iTunes would hurt or help develop your fan base?
As long as it’s good quality, it can only help. Poor quality hurts everyone.

11. Do you know that there are licensing requirements to recording covers (and selling them)?
Yes there are. But I don’t release them commercially myself so I don’t have to deal with it.

12. Do you know about how much a mechanical license costs?
I think about $50 per song per thousand CDs.

13. Do you know how to go about getting mechanical licenses for song covers?
Go to Harry Fox.

14. Do you know how to go about getting licenses for samples?
That is much more complicated as you need to contact people that own the master rights to the recordings as well as publishers & songwriters. Part of why I don’t do it unless it’s a recording that’s passed into the public domain.

15. If you did a cover, what would you be willing to pay to have all the mechanical rights simple licenses handled?
I guess maybe $20 for going through the Harry Fox thing so I didn’t have to.

16. Have you ever submitted your music to CD Baby, Tuncore, iTunes, Tarnius, CafePress, etc. without clearing samples and/or getting a mechanical license for covers?
Nope.

17. For your original songs, have you registered them with a performing rights society?
Always.

18. For your original songs, have you created a publishing company with a performing rights society?
Of course, that’s why I’m a member.

19. Do you think you fan base is interested in you doing covers appropriate to your band’s ID?
I think they’re more interested in the inappropriate ones. It’s more creative.

20. Take five (5) of your all-time favorite famous songs. If you presented them to your fan base for their opinion on which one they’d like to hear you cover, would that be of interest to you?
Not really.

21. If not (to the question above), why?
I think I’d rather the covers be a surprise. They’re mainly for the live show anyway.

slack lack

Did some follow up for the mini-comics & Northern Valentine/Hotel Hotel today.  That was most of the day.  Also helping a friend with some ideas to get to the next level.  Got the SLF vs slicnaton material & haven’t had time to mess with it yet.

Just found out my second cousin’s husband runs the label The Swords are on.  Maybe I can get the nepotism groove going.

For those of you noticing my slight lack of getting as much done lately, I have had some increases in responsibility with taking care of my grandmother & a little more work doing my secret medical billing gig (which doesn’t pay as much as I charge for things I’m skilled at, but I’m figuring out how to do it a little streamlined which will essentially increase my hourly pay).

easily exhausted

The Small Life Form versus slicnaton session went pretty great, but it was a bit exhausting working on improvisational feedback based music for 6 hours.  We made some video footage as well, so we’ll see what the final results are like over the next month.

So I’ve noticed a lot of larger bands on MySpace now have their whole catalogs up on their players with Amazon.com links.  Does anyone know how to set that up for folks like us Silberians?

I’m about half finished with Lost Kisses #8.  It’s good to get stuff done some times.

Official street date for Remora’s Derivative (on Gears of Sand) has been set for February 15.  I’ll let you know when I get some in stock to sell.

I’ve been thinking about stopping putting the full versions of the comics up for free to increase sales of the physical units.  But then again the web comic Last Blood was a free dealie & made their money in the end selling a film option after gaining some popularity.  What do you guys think?

today & tomorrow

So I got in my new little amp & it is smaller & less loud than I anticipated.  It has 4 speakers & they’re only about 3 inches each!  It’s a Roland so the sound quality is pretty good & the distortion is better than I’m used to from the JC-120.  But it’s not designed to be able to be daisy chained (headphone jack that turns off the speaker), but I’ll see if I can daisy chain in with my lunchbox Quantum.  It would be a cute little set-up if I can get it to sound good.  The JC just takes up a lot of space in my car for touring.

I finally finished drawing issue #7 of Lost Kisses.  So now I’m working on issues #8, #9, & #10.

Working on scheduling a tour for Remora.  Originally it looked like I was going to do about 30 days, but I realize with my life situation I can’t spend that much time out of the house.  So I’m going to split it into a 7 day leg & a 10 day leg & cut the other two weeks.  A little lame & not what I should do for my “career,” but sometimes life comes first.

Tomorrow is going to be a recording session for Small Life Form versus slicnaton.  Should be pretty great.

Life is slowing me down

I had a series of fairly freaky dreams last night that managed to pre-occupy my mind enough I couldn’t really motivate myself to work on anything.  (a) One was about being on tour with my brother & my mother in an SUV & running out of gas in the mountains late at night.  (b) One was about swimming with Natalie Wood in a river & a cave & trying to figure out if I could make out with her without drowning.  (c) One was about getting my mind wiped completely clean in some kind of hospital or college that was the convenience store to a gas station on the outside & definitely took place in a small town in the wooded rural area between Portland & Tacoma.  If I were to guess what these things mean I would guess that (a) my brother, mother, & myself all have a lot going on in our lives & we’re running out of the energy to keep from having a nervous breakdown, (b) I probably recently saw an ad for a Natalie Wood movie & I spliced it with “Jewels of Gwahlur” which I recently read (Conan gets trapped in a river in a cave), (c) I have a plot development for the Worms storyline before the current issue is finished being drawn instead of a year later.

I did get some orders filled today & I got my first check from Squidco (whom I relatively recently started working with) & I bought a ticket to see Jandek (thanks for the tip Pete).

Yesterday I bought 100 two-inch by three-inch canvases & a jar of cancer causing copper paint at the art store.

Also yesterday was the big interview for the local weekly.  I think it went well.  Of course I’m kinda scared a bit.  But I suppose I always am scared of stories that I know aren’t going to be straight Q&A.  I hate it when people say do the shit where they make it seem like I was talking/bragging about something when I was simply answering their question & even worse is when they have really long sentences where they say “He thought & gave the post-rock answer of ‘No.’”  But we’ll see what happens, I got a pretty good vibe from the whole thing & it made me feel like I should pay more attention to my local scene than I do.

caught a song

So I got caught up on my paperwork for sales in the month of January & the month went pretty well (mainly due to three significant payments from distributors).  It passed third quarter 2008 & is on par to be with 2007 numbers.  Most of the orders have been international, so I guess the tanking dollar is helping me.

Wrote/recorded a little song for possible soundtrack use based on someone else’s lyrics.  Never really tried to do that before & it is a weird vibe to try to do.  But I think it worked out fine as what it is.  It reminds me of the songs I did for themed literary comps about Oedipus Rex, Franz Kafka, & Renaux (sp?) the Fox; not my best or most inspired material, but better than my early catalog.

I think I finished all the paperwork for my grant & can get it mailed off tomorrow.

I found the place I want to use to get some full color stickers done.  They’re cheap & don’t last forever in the rain, but worth trying out at least.

I just checked out of curiosity & no Lost Kisses have been on ebay lately.  Kinda nice to know the reviewers actually want to keep them.

amps & interviews

Well, I just bought a 1980s Roland amp off ebay for $51 with shipping.  I’m looking for something loud enough for most venues I play in that doesn’t take up quite as much space in my car as the JC-120.

I just watched on Guy’s Big Bite how to make home made veggie burgers.  I guess I’ll have to try it pretty soon.

Working some more on getting the interviews ready to send out for the new QRD.  It should’ve been done months ago, but I’ve just been trying to do too many things at once instead of focusing on any one thing to complete.

comics & cameras

Filled some orders today & I’ll ship them out tomorrow.

Made some slight adjustments to one of the new comics to make it easier for the artist to work on.

I got a new camera today.  I expect to use it in a similar seldom manner to my previous 6 cameras (though I do admit to using my first two cameras quite a bit).

I’ve realized lately that it seems everyone I meet that I seem to get along with pretty well I eventually find out was raised in a church with kneelers & took a lot of hallucinogens in high school.  I wonder if that means I’d get along with everyone who meets those qualifications or if it’s just a coincidence.

So I sent a package of my comics to Dave Sim (Cerebus) & I got back a form letter saying he couldn’t spare the time to look at my stuff unless I signed an online petition saying I believed he wasn’t a misogynist.  I thought it was pretty funny.  I did sign the petition, but the whole idea about caring about what other people think enough to form such a petition is kinda funny.  Maybe I should make people sign an online petition stating I’m not a jack-ass before I listen to their demos….

I got word from both Kim & Melissa that the new Worms & XO are being worked on right now.  Pretty sweet.

Still no word back from the two other labels supposedly releasing new Remora stuff soon.  I am starting to understand why people don’t like working with labels.

mini-mini-mini

Getting some work done on the mini-comics.  Slow & steady wins the race.

Kwok Talk reviews our new minis.  You should check it out some time.

Looks like I’ll be playing in Cleveland on March 13.  It’s nice to have a tour to look forward to where I know a dozen folks will come to see me at least once.

Looks like some work is going to be coming to me on the promo front which is always good because I can’t lose money working for someone else like I can working for myself.

Comics & Brothers

So today I wrote the first draft of what will probably be a one off comic.  I need to type it in still.

I also talked to one of the folks I collaborate with on comics about the fact that what I do is not really a script at all because I don’t give the artist any description of what to draw.  So I guess that’s true & I understand the complaint.  But I feel if I’m just asking someone to be a robot & draw to my specifications, it becomes work for hire instead of a collaboration.  Which means (a) I should pay them & (b) they should have no share in my intellectual property.  But the whole reason I want to work with other people on comics is the collaborative process.  I actually can draw things besides stick figures & in general the people I choose to work with is because I think their style would add an interesting take on the story.  XO to me is way more interesting with Melissa drawing than if it was done in a more super-heroic style.  Worms is way better at feeling like a dream with Kim drawing it than it would be with anyone else I know.  I don’t know, I don’t choose to work with people simply because they’re available.  I try to work with people on things they’re interested in & can contribute to artistically.  & if they’re contributing artistically they become part owner of the intellectual property with an investment rather than being a hired hand with an upfront payment.  I feel the same way about music oddly enough.

My brother told me he’s been starting to play guitar again.  So maybe he’ll be in the full band version of Remora.  I guess I’d have to let him listen to my music first.  Or I could always just let him be on stage & unplug the amp.
