Show & Guitars

So at the show earlier I had the same problem I’ve been having with half my rig dying out.  I realized that a reason I might not have gotten it to happen at home is that I usually have my rig turned on in idle for an hour before I play & at home I have it turned on for fifteen minutes checking things.  I know in the past I had a Lexicon LXP-5 that had a problem that it would stop working after 20 minutes (maybe a bad heat sink inside, but I’m no engineer), so maybe something like that is going on here.  So in the near future I’ll try to test that theory out.  & now when I think about how the next show I’m playing is at a venue that the last time I played there when I turned all my pedals on at once I couldn’t get enough electricty & the whole signal would just cut out, it sounds like a recipe for disaster.  Despite all this I feel like it was a good sounding show.

Listened to a couple demos today (something I rarely get a chance to do lately) & it made me feel much more competent both as a musician & label because the quality was just so far below what is done at Silber.  Probably one of them will go on to make another label tons of money.

Out of the blue I got contacted by Kim Chee (Pineal Ventana).  It’s always nice to hear from folks you played with over a decade ago.  Literally the first live Remora show was opening for them in Atlanta.

Down in the dumps about looking at the paperwork for the end of the year, in the red with a lot of expenses not even entered.  I think the word to describe it is crappy.

Why do most starter guitars have whammy bars on them?  Is it to make them difficult to keep in tune & make guitars a worse experience for beginners?  I mean even Dave Mustaine’s signature guitar doesn’t have one, so who really needs it other than a studio musician doing something for a cowboy soundtrack?

New Moodring stuff for free!

Spent the day doing some email catch up stuff.  Some stuff wasn’t contacted back from about three weeks ago.

There seems to be something wrong with my tap water & so I had to go to Wal-Mart at 6:30am so there was water for me & my grandma today.  Usually when the water goes bad it’s for a month & has to do with the city cleaning out the reservoir or something.

Moodring appeared on the latest Sessions from the Box, you guys should check it out.

I’m fairly confused by the lack of downloads of the free stuff.  The Christmas comp got less than 500, Aarktica & Remora each only got 50, & Moodring & Small Life Form got a little less than that.  So 50 people want the free Aarktica EP, but about 1000 people wanted to download the album for free illegally.  Maybe I should just announce the free things as releases & figure the powers that be for piracy will do a better job of disseminating it than I can.  Very confusing to me.  Especially since I sent out emails to about a thousand people who’ve ordered stuff from Silber in the past.  Weird.  & I think there’s been about a dozen posts about them in various blogs & stuff.  Whatever.

Small Life Form show in Durham, NC tomorrow if you’re interested.

More tomorrow….

Junk/Dream

Sent out some orders today.

Did the promo blast on MySpace about the two upcoming shows.  Hopefully some folks will be around for them.

I need to get myself more organized.  I feel pretty far behind in life.

Dream:
I’m sitting with her in a mexican restaurant (the fact that I haven’t seen her in ten years throws me off on what year it is, it somehow feels like it is 2000, but I could be wrong).  She’s sitting on the edge of the booth, one leg out into the restaurant like she’s about to get up & she has her right hand clenched on the table so tight the laquer finish is getting tiny cracks in it.  She looks like a wild animal, a predator.  She’s waiting for someone to attack & I’m scared that when she does we’ll get thrown out of the restaurant.  I can’t tell if her behaviour is from being on drugs (PCP) or not being on drugs (effexor?).  She’s grinding & baring her teeth & it makes me start grinding mine together & I can feel that whatever has taken her over is taking me over.  The right side of my head is starting to not function properly, the ear going dead & the eye half shutting as my left eye opens wider.  Maybe I should kill her so that she doesn’t get us thrown out of the restaurant or at least kill her before whatever is wrong with her that she’s giving to me takes me over completely.  My fingernails are diggening into the laquer of the table & I feel like I’m trying to suppress a scream & something is trying to escape from the top right hand side of my skull & I can’t breathe in & the air is cold.  This is where Hyde really comes from; not a potion, a woman.

Flyers & Comics

So I made some flyers for an upcoming show.  Lately I’ve been doing these flyers where they’re hand painted art objects (takes about 2 hours per flyer, so I just did 4 & will send some standard ones as well).  Not sure if it’s really worth the time it takes to make them or if the venues ever even hang them.  But I guess what else can you do?

Joined up on comicbookdb.com to list some of my mini-comics on it.  It takes longer than I want it to & I’m not sure if it really helps anything.  I’m still confused by the lack of reviews of the recent batch of comics.

I’m hoping to get a comic script written tonight, we’ll see if it happens.

equipment reviews

Okay, so over the past few months I’ve gotten a few new pieces of equipment & tonight is the first time I’ve really messed around with them, so here you go….

Rocktron R10 Rampage – 40 watt amplifier with probably a six inch speaker.  So  yeah it’s a practice amp & it cost me $25 with shipping.  When I first plugged it in it was making a pretty horrible amount of noise, but after twenty minutes it went away (giving a second or two of the noise per ten minutes), so it is probably just dust on the inside burning off (at least that’s what I like to think).  It has an overdrive button which I would think would add distortion to the signal, but actually just seems to make everything (including the noise floor) louder.  The only out jack it has is a headphones out, but it’ll probably make a nice little practice amp & it only weighs ten pounds.

Rocktron Pulse Tremelo – If I remember right Slayer uses this pedal.  It has true bypass & the LED blinks at the speed of your tremelo.  A knob for tremelo speed & one for intensity & switch for saw tooth or sine wave functionality.  Built like a tank.  You could probably kill a zombie with it & still feel comfortable using it at a show.  I think it was a steal at $20.

Behringer Digital Multi-FX FX600 – This was only $20 & I’m not sure how I feel about it.  It sucks volume pretty bad even when turned off.  The LED to tell you if it’s turned on is wired wrong so it lights up to tell you it’s turned off (at least that’s what mine seemed to do).  It’s made out of plastic so durability might be an issue.  It has the most screwed up way to get into a battery that I’ve ever seen (requires jamming two pens to the side of it simultaneously).  The knob to select what effect you want to use (it has flanger, chorus, delay, tremelo, & pitch shifter) strangely just twists like a normal knob (rather than clicking to select) & just changes the sound at a certain point where it “feels like it.”  Also the external power jack seemed to act a little wonky with cutting out. But despite all this the thing is kinda cool.  I got it in the hopes it would be my octave pedal solution, & while it isn’t that, it is $100 less than the Boss Pitch Shifter.  The delay on it is pretty ridiculous & usable for getting some freaky sounds with both knobs on ten, but it does start to go nuts & glitch out with things on ten (good or bad? you decide)).  I could probably pull off a show & get a lot of cool sounds with two of this pedal.  But that’s assuming it’s road worthy, which I’m not too sure about.  Also it has the stereo in/out feature (though off hand I would bet it’s two ins & outs rather than stereo ins & outs) so you can feed it back into itself to use it for its own no input glitcher/tone genrator.  I feel it really showcases that technology is at a point where if they would spend another ten dollars during manufacturing to get this thing true bypass & a sturdy box, you could have an incredible pedal for very little money.  But as it is I can’t really say anything until I know whether it breaks in a year or less.  If you don’t own any pedals, I’d probably say this is worth every penny.

Behringer CT100 Cable Tester – Check the cables to see if they work.  I paid $35 & found two intermittently bad cables.  Probably already paid for itself in frustration.  It also has a thing where it can generate two test tones (440 Hz & 1 kHz) so you can use it for nutty stuff you would need that for.

Comic Shirts Coming Soon….

I went through Marked, XO, & Just A Man picking images for potential shirts.  So Lost Kisses is the only one left to go through for that purpose.  I’d like to think people will be into them, but who knows.  Cafe Press seems pricier than it used to be & so I’ll look into some other places (Threadless, Snorg Tees, ComicSpace).

Not much else done today, just the family activities associated with Christmas.

Music

So I recorded something for the first time in a long time.  Not sure what I think of it, so I posted it here on the Silber MySpace for some comments.  Remora’s “Last Call for Alcohol.”

I got an artist working on a new comic.  It’s actually in need of a title.  It’s about a guy chased by demons that kill his friends & he’s a touring musician.

Listened to Iggy Pop’s new record.  Kind of a cross between zydeco & the Twin Peaks soundtrack.  Maybe he’s back on the way to doing stuff I’m interested in.

Merry Christmas.

Back in the Groove

I think the Sarah June artwork is done.  So it should go off for manufacturing early next week.

I got in my new batch of silberspy masks today.  I feel like a bit of a nut for having gotten this many for no apparent reason.  I’ll need to buy a house to hang them up in once Silber makes its millions.

I went through grabbing images from Worms for making shirts via CafePress.  It seems like the shirts cost more than they used to their, but if people see stuff they want, then they’ll be able to get it.  We’ll see, I don’t know if anyone has ever bought any of the other shirts I have up there.  I always thought the Remora Anaaron stuff was cool & would sell, but it seems like I’m in the minority on that.

Got an email from Chris Olley (Six by Seven/Twelve) that he’s started up a boutique guitar pedal line.  I wrote to him suggesting my true bypass effect loop volume pedal style fade-in/out design.  No word back on that.  He did tell me that the octave pedal I’m looking for is the Electro Harmonix POG.  So I guess I’ll look into it evn though I’ve traditionally had bad luck with EH pedals crapping out for no reason.

I’m looking for a non-playable violin & bow to use to make my tape violin more theatrical & playable.  So if anyone has one let me know & I’ll pay for shipping.

With the on-going delay I keep putting on myself with Remora’s Mecha, I’m thinking about adding a new song to it.  A song that’s three years old, never recorded, & porbably only heard by a dozen folks.  Just got to see if I can figure out how to play it again as it’s been stuck in my head for the last month.  The song’s called “Last Call for Alcohol” & is obviously a tear sucking ballad with only 4 words….  It’ll add the amount of unreleased songs on the disc to about 50% compared to the reworked pieces.

I hear Best Buy now sells musical equipment.  Anybody know how true this is?  Is it similar to the musical equipment at Target & Wal-Mart?

Going to start doing some stuff for getting the next issue of QRD going.  Anyone interested in being a contributor?  I’m looking for people interested in conducting interviews or writing witty beer reviews.

In the sad news department, the much beloved River City Arts in Smithfield is going to be moving from it’s large cool space on Third Street to being inside of an office building measuring 20′x25′ which will inhibit the ability to host weird music a bit.  A big thanks to Kirk Adam for fighting the good fight & bringing cool stuff to Smithfield for so long.  For those of you outside of my immediate area, Smithfield is a small town (population 13,000, about 12 square miles, 20% of the population below the poverty line (info from wikipedia)) with no reason to have an art scene in it (no university, no huge philanthropic organization) & it gives a lot of hope to the idea any small town could really become a thriving place of culture with 30 active people in an artistic community.  There’s just a need for the spark.  Of course the art gallery was able to exist because they were able to get a rent free venue in an empty store front thanks to Chris Johnson (Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation).  So hopefully something even better will turn up sometime.  We’ll see what happens.

More Behind than Ahead

Got a constructive email from friend/reviewer Mark Tucker that most of the description blurbs on the Silber site are not particular good/useful to anyone not already familiar with the music.  I get so steeped into Silber that I forget that other people don’t know the material & that a description that just says another great release from Lycia doesn’t mean anything to a lot of people.  So I need to add re-working those things to my to do list.

Got things done with Moodring: Live & it’s up at the downloads page.

I was looking at the stats about the recent batch of mini-comics & usually I get 40-50% of my promos reviewed & this time it’s only been 10%.  It makes me wonder why.  Have I been over saturating people with the mini-comics (three batches went out this year) or did people hate the DVD or is working with Dave Sim really a liability instead of an asset?  Maybe it’s just the time of year & I’m being paranoid.

The Carta album arrived at my house today.  So I need to get on point about that release.  Kyle is already getting stuff ready for the promotional EP.

Colleagues & Movies

Got out my follow-up emails to the comics & CDs.  Hopefully it will generate some more reviews.

I talked with Shane Sauers (Starbage Hands/North Pole Records/Miss Massive Snowflake) today about a bunch of business stuff about slight mods we each need to do to our label websites (download stores, mp3s playing in flash instead of links, drop boxes to make easier navigation with the expanding roster).  I love that Silber is easy to navigate, but if I’m adding a dozen bands to the roster next year with the digital shop, I need to make a better way to navigate from band to band.

Bob Freville pitched to me about making a film based on Remora: Mecha.  Which is semi-crazy & semi-awesome.  When I think about what I’d want things to look like & all that it gets scary.  The question of my involvement with it comes up pretty quickly as far as when I would want to be involved or not involved.  I have a lot of weird ideas about movies & scripts & acting & directing that probably have nothing to do with the realities of making movies.  One of my main premises is that most actors are horrible so you should write a script such that they basically play themselves.  Which means not writing the script until after you have the talent.  Which is kind of a backwards way to do things.  Probably has to do with me liking Mike Leigh a lot in my early twenties.  Maybe after I do the “Check” short with Will Dodson & Stwrongtone I’ll have better ideas of what can be reasonable expectations of myself & others.

Slept a lot of my day away with pain medicine for my toe.  Hopefully I’ll get more work done tomorrow.
