Sickness & Dreams

So I’ve been out of town for over a month now on the road.  Finally got a bad cold, which sucks.   Last night’s show & tonight’s are only thirty minutes apart, so staying at the same hotel & hopefully I’ll …

Long Days

Not a lot going on.  Today marks the third eight hour plus drive day in a row on the tour.  Which makes me even more exhausted & cranky than normal.  On the plus side I am getting some comic stuff …

this is one reason why i prefer to “tour” in the north east. the time we went to texas/midwest was probalby the worst touring experience.

Finally Checking It Out: Archie

life with archie 126Like a lot of folks I suppose, I was always aware of Archie because of the digest comics at the grocery store checkout, but never actually read any.  As a kid I didn’t buy them because they seemed too “baby” …

Sad Dreams

So one of the things this tour is really hitting me hard about is that I really don’t feel like I have a home anymore.  It’s been two years now since my grandmother went into a coma & died in …

My life recently (ignoring actual important emotional trauma bits)

I wrote a few comics (XO & REH) & have been reading a ton of comics (mainly Archies, review coming soon).  Still trying to figure out exactly how to actually get work done.  Wrote a few little pieces about life …

“it’s 100 but you can’t touch” was probably the funniest/creepiest thing i’ve heard someone say in their sleep.

Nostalgia Equals Distortion – Fruit Pies

Brian John Mitchell & a fruit pieGrowing up I never had fruit pies.  Generally speaking whatever food I got was what my mom had in the house & the only pre-made snack thing I remember being in the house was Twinkies.  But when I took my …

One Response to Nostalgia Equals Distortion – Fruit Pies

Not to mention that they’re made with animal shortening a.k.a. beef fat! As a kid, one of my favorite things to do was prove my friends wrong about that. I’d tell them “Beef Fat” was one of the ingredients and they’d swear it wasn’t possible until I showed them the ingredients on the wrapper. At some point in the past 15 years they switched the ingredient name to “Animal Shortening” but it’s the same thing as far as I know.

I did some searching and apparently the fruit pies are different under Hostess’s new management (the company closed down at the end of 2012, new owners re-opened it in summer 2013). Everybody seems to be complaining about the new crust being softer, thinner, and wetter than the original. Softer. Thinner. Wetter.

    Softer. Thinner. Wetter.

Finally Checking It Out – Chew Volume 1: Taster’s Choice by John Layman & Rob Guillory

Chew - Taster's ChoiceSo I guess it’s worth mentioning that the only way I find out about comics is Gutter Trash.  Both Jason & Eric dug this book, so when I saw it in a discount bin on tour, I figured it …

Finally Checking It Out – Marvel Spotlight #6: Star-Lord by Doug Moench & Tom Sutton

Marvel Spotlight #6 Star-LordSo I found this comic in a dollar bin & bought it relatively as an investment comic since Star-Lord is supposed to be in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie.  I remember picking up the next issue of Marvel Spotlight …

Finally Checking It Out – Dreadstar: The Price by Jim Starlin

Dreadstar: The Price

Growing up Dreadstar might have been the first non-mainstream comic I bought.  It was put out by Marvel (under the Epic banner) so it was available at newsstands & it was about a revolutionary war in outer space so it …

Last year I read a bunch of the color Dreadstar stuff for the first time. #1-16 if I remember correctly. It was fantastic. Even though it has a lot of old school things going on with the art and story, it’s still a terrific read.
