Blogs, Remora

I got some work done researching some more bloggers to service for Silber when the next bit of promo is ready to happen.

I got a few hundred more images done for the video for Remora’s “My Brother’s Guns & Knives” & maybe I’ll be able to finish it up in the next day or two.  I think I just have about 500 images to go.  I’m not sure how I feel about the whole process of doing the stop motion stuff.  I guess it will depend on the reaction I get from people after it’s done?  But I think it might be a thing where I eventually want to try using it as a way to tell narratives as opposed to just in songs & comics.

Sonic Youth, WordPress, Dreams

So Kim Gordon & Thurston Moore are breaking up.  This one didn’t hit me too hard as I was never a huge Sonic Youth fan (just a guy who liked some of their music), but back 15 years ago when Michael Gira & Jarboe of Swans broke up it really threw me for a loop as far as the hope of ever being able to find that ideal relationship of either (a) two equals that are successful artistic individuals (I’m not going to get into the debate about how many people are willing to shush off Jarboe & Gordon as tagalongs as I think it’s false) or (b) the ability of a semi-broken man (representing myself) to somehow ensnare an angel.  Of course both of these things are wrong & about celebrity worship, but when you’re someone obsessed with music it’s really hard to find any role models that present themselves as being in any kind of successful romantic relationship that doesn’t seem detrimental to their art.  There have been a couple minor rock star couples I’ve been friends with that have made me retain hope for the dream (in fact I did a series of interviews with them a few years ago in QRD), but also see the reality of the everyday problems in any relationship because in the end we’re all just people, which unfortunately kills the dream of one day rising up to having some kind of ideal indie rock god life.

So I found out there was a problem with the webplayer plugin here on the blog not working, presumably because of some sort of WordPress update along the way.  Tried uninstalling it & re-installing to no avail.  Tried to put in a half dozen other players before I found one that vaguely worked in the way I wanted (it’s actually the same Yahoo Javascript I use on the main site, kinda funny).  So a bit of a waste of most of my morning.

Last Night’s Dreams:
I wake up lying next to a girl that looks vaguely familiar in the shadows, like she might be a girl I haven’t seen in fifteen years & never knew the name of.  I want to take a shower, but there’s a line of people to use the bathroom in the apartment.  I don’t even know what city I’m in.

My brother is getting equipment together for his first live show.  He has all these weird homebrewed pedals that are just circuit boards not in enclosures & he’s stacking them together with bubble wrap in between them & shoving them in a book bag.  Seems like a bad idea.

Remora, Vlor, QRD Submissions, Dreams

So I played my guitar quite a bit today, maybe even got in the hour I used to try to play every day.  The fingers on my left hand hurt, but they aren’t bleeding.  Before you know it I’ll have scratchy guitar fingers again.  Anyway, I recorded a quick demo of this song I wrote back in July.

In other Remora-ish news, Peter Aldrich posted up another video from our jam in 2002.  This one is interesting because the “loop” riff is similar to, if not identical to, some Vlor song & in my song notebook it is listed as “Vlor Song” & the version of it I’ve been doing for the past five years involves me looping & playing three parts over top of each other, but here I am before a looping pedal just droning out on a really repetitive riff.  It makes me want to try to catch up with Russell Halasz (original Vlor guitarist) & try to do some recording, but even though we are technically friends on Facebook I think it’s not too likely to happen.  So it might be a better idea to get some duets going with Mister Aldrich while we’re at a space where that is a possible thing to happen in life.

I want to try to do an essay driven issue of QRD where people (other than me) write about the dichotomies in art & music that they either struggle with or have found a way to resolve.  Things like art versus craft or art versus entertainment or fair use versus intellectual property or coming to terms with artistic limitations.  So if you are interested in writing something for it, give me a shout.  I like things short enough that people might actually read them, so probably 200-1000 words is about right.

Last Night’s Dream:
I’m sitting in my room & I’m cold & I realize I lost the technology to make myself warm.

Remora, XLK, Promotion

So the Remora show next week is going to be a full band thing with me on guitar & vocals, Brian McKenzie on guitar, Chrissy Kotsopoulos on keyboards, Michael Wood on bass, & drums & piano & horns pre-recorded.  We’ll see how it works out.  My mind isn’t working quite right still & when I pick up my guitar I can’t remember how to play my songs.

So I’ve been talking to Nick Marino & we’re going to nix the Deadpool book & bring the storyline into XLK.  Of course prior to that we need to set all the background up so the storyline works.  So today I’m working on XLK #2′s first draft.  We’ll see how long it takes to get it to a point where I’m ready to deliver it to be drawn.

I did the final wave of follow-up for the new releases.  It’s kinda crazy to me how few people who I’m normally in touch with about new releases haven’t done reviews this time out nor even responded to tell me they received them.  I’m not sure what that’s about nor how to deal with things in the future.  But I guess people just don’t talk about music like they used to.  I mean, my Facebook friends stream should be pretty music-centric, but instead it seems like it’s american-politics-centric & that shit is just making me numb to it all.  I wish the american empire would just go ahead & collapse so we could all get jobs at call centers answering questions from Chinese consumers.

Video Entertainment Entry – Sun Ra, 2002, People Who Do Noise,

Okay, so I wanted to make an entry with some video stuff in it rather than it just being about me like it normally is….

Here’s a Sun Ra documentary from the BBC.  It’s at least as much about him as artistic figure as a musician which I always find interesting.  I know that a lot of people are fascinated with him because of him being a freaky quasi-celebrity, but I think his music has actually been somewhat dismissed as less groundbreaking, important, & just good than it is for all of that.

Here’s a video of me & Peter Aldrich doing a little unpracticed jam together back in 2002 at a party for WNCW’s ARC Overnight.  I’m not sure it’s “good,” but it’s interesting to have a document from this long ago.

Here’s a documentary about noise music in Portland.  It kinda makes me want to see nearly identical documentaries about all the area code noise scenes.  Maybe I’ll get on that at some point….

QRD, Family, Galaxy Rangers

So I noticed today that one set of the ten rotating ads on the left hand side on QRD wasn’t working.  It ends up I had an extra quotation mark in the raw code that was blocking it from working on all of the several hundred pages at QRD.  I of course didn’t want to fix them all by hand & I found this pretty powerful little free program called Notepad++ that I’d really suggest for anyone that ever has to run a search & replace on a bunch of files at once.  It probably is also superior to Notepad for a text editor based on its name.

Thanks to everyone for all the kind words regarding my grandmother’s death.  We got the body back from the coroner today, they decided not to continue the investigation of it as a suspicious death & not do an autopsy, which is a load off my mind.  The last thing I need is a cop accusing me of killing my grandmother & me getting pissed off & beating the shit out of him over it & going to jail.  I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it lately, but I fucking hate cops.

I was talking to my son last night (he recently moved to Oakland to go to Mills for his Masters Degree in composition) & he was talking about how he can’t tell if shows are better attended there or if he only knows about a show if it’s being really well promoted.  Which is a funny but true idea.  I feel like I really rarely know about anything going on as far as live shows or even albums by favorite bands. I would suggest you to go through Mitcccny.

I saw a friend who runs a label I think of as a peer to Silber post on Facebook that if he didn’t sell 20 direct orders of an album that was released today (Tuesday is new release day if you didn’t know), he was going to close down the label.  WTF?  20 direct orders in a day seems completely unrealistic to me in 2011.  I mean I could see saying that if you don’t get 20 pre-orders you won’t bother manufacturing a disc, but maybe I’m wrong about them being a peer label & they sell millions of records or something….

Here’s another episode of the Galaxy Rangers, this one maybe combining Shane & Blade Runner or something that I haven’t actually seen before….

Ethel, Galaxy Rangers, Dreams

My grandmother died last night.  I was holding her hand.  It still seemed like she was dying alone despite me being there with her.  Which reminds me of years ago before I quit my job to take care of her & she was in an old folks’ home & I was sitting with her in the crowded dining room & a woman whose chair was back to back with mine & the chairs were literally touching & the woman died & I didn’t notice.  Which puts some of the magic about a soul & spirit into question.  I was kinda hoping to still get to hang out with her Casper the Friendly Ghost style, but it’s looking unlikely at this point….

I just found out that one of my favorite cartoons as a kid is on Hulu.  Here’s one of my favorite episodes of The Galaxy Rangers, though it really has nothing to do with the major plot of the series & three of the four main characters don’t appear & the one who does doesn’t even use his powers….

Last Night’s Dream:
Wandering around the city looking for a party, picking up & discarding various cohorts along the way.  I run into a group of girls that have lines drawn down their faces & diamonds drawn on like the nine of diamonds in a pack of cards.  The last place I end up before giving up on the party search is a room in a library where there is some sort of city council or board meeting or something.

Ethel, Magnet, Labels, Cerebus, YouTube, Dreams

So my grandmother is still alive.  I’m sitting next to her right now.  She hasn’t spoken since Monday & her eyes haven’t been open for more than a few seconds since late Wednesday night.  I’m giving her morphine once an hour.  Her skin’s starting to breakdown.  A pretty freaking depressing scenario that makes it hard to do much of anything (examples being sleep & eat).

I did manage to make it out to fill some orders & check my mail & I got the new issue of Magnet.  The most interesting thing is it was the first issue in three years & I hadn’t even noticed.  I always like their intros & the end rant about the return of 1990s bands is pretty fun (at least worth reading in the book store if not worth buying it).  It makes me feel like less of an old man since the people who do that magazine are probably all ten to twenty years older than me.  But one of the really interesting things I noticed was that pretty much none of the ads in the magazine mentioned a label; they said the release, but not the label it was under.  I’m not sure what that’s about.  I have also noticed lately that is seems like every band who can sell 10,000 units starts their own label this year (Interpol, Beirut, Gillian Welch, Wilco, & I’m sure dozens more I’m forgetting all in 2011) which is interesting & I wonder how it will effect the industry if at all.  On the one hand I feel it is kinda crappy because some bands really do get a good launch to their career from a label who is able to get them national exposure & help them get a decent tour put together & then they jump ship when they are on the verge of making money.  On the other hand who knows what their deals are like.  & I’m curious how big of a headache it becomes for record stores, distributors, & fans as far as getting the music.  I imagine in ending up raising the prices of CDs in stores (because of the way distribution channels often work) & increasing the delay between an order & it getting in shop & who knows what happens with a band on tour 100 days trying to fill orders &/or get something re-pressed & such.  I’m not sure if it’s a step towards artistic control or a stagger towards the death of physical media & the further alienation of music fans.  Maybe both.

I got the tentative layout done for a Cerebus fan comic I did with Jason Young (Veggie Dog Saturn) pending approval by Jason & Dave Sim.  I’ll let you know when I make it actually available to the masses.

Some dude on YouTube recently has put up some of the tracks from Silber comps up there with just the artwork as the video.  I’m not exactly sure how I feel about it.  I mean, I guess it’s fine & it should help spread the word, but I think he should have asked first.  I found out through Google Alerts & most of the videos have zero views, so I guess it’s just as well someone other than me waste their time doing it.

Recent Dreams:
I’m at a 1940s dime a dance club, but I don’t have any dimes.  I’m looking at the record spin around on the player as everyone else dances.  It says “Cry Angel” on the record.

I go back to work at my overnight job at the airport.  Surprisingly one of my dead co-workers has also come back to work.  He looks a little heavier than I remember & I’m happy to see him again.

My grandmother sits up in the bed as if she’s only been sleeping instead of being in a coma.  I giver her a waffle & a popsicle & help her get in her wheelchair & take her for a walk around the neighborhood.

Machines have taken over the world.  Most are dumb machines & part of a hive mind, but still smart enough to enslave humanity so all we exist to do is repair them.  There is however a small sector where there are intelligent independent robots & their leader has a power to levitate pieces of metal & tear them apart.  He hires me & a few other humans to take apart old machines to help him find an ancient integrated circuit that will help him to decipher the true origin of robots.  My hands are cut & bleeding from trying to pull apart the old machines without tools.

I offer God to make a deal to trade ten years off my life in exchange for ten years for my grandmother & God tells me I already made that deal ten years ago.

Stompfest, death in the family, dreams

So Stompfest was a lot of fun.  A couple hundred people out in the middle of no where looking at my mini-comics & listening to Silberian music.  Some folks even bought some of the mini-comics.

So if you read the blog regularly, you know my grandmother fell last week.  When I left Saturday morning she seemed to be doing fine.  When I got back Sunday afternoon she was near catatonic & occassionally going into seizures.  Monday we took her to her doctor & she said the ER doctors had missed that there was internal hemorrhaging on the brain & there was nothing to be done at this point & she’ll be dead by the end of the week.  I like honesty, but it kinda sucks.  So major changes in the Silber camp are most likely afoot.

Last Night’s Dreams:
Trying to sell some loose Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars action figures from the 1980s to a comic shop.  I talk about selling some Star Wars ones, but at fifty cents a figure it hardly seems worth the trouble.

Getting Ready, the Internet is Forever, NYCC, Dreams

Just spent the day getting ready for the festival up in Lansing tomorrow.  Printing some comics up, checking if the audio equipment is working, packing the car.  I’ll report back on it all Sunday when I get back.

I got an odd email today.  More or less a fan letter from a middle school teacher who was using an old page of QRD with zombie links for a resource for kids in her class suggesting two links be added.  I made the page in 2000 or so, strange how the internet can last forever.

Any of you going to the New York Comic Con, my friend & occasional collaborator Nick Marino is there at Table D15 in Artist Alley.

Last Night’s Dream:
On tour with Hotel Hotel & we’re trying to cut the budget by spending less money on food, so we’re saving some of the band beers from the previous night to drink for breakfast as an energy source.  Just like when I was 23 & tried to run my body on a steady diet of tequilla & pretended it was rocket fuel.
