QRD, Christmas Comp, Dream

I finally finished going through watching all the episodes of the original Outer Limits.  Not sure what my next show to fall asleep watching will be.  Maybe Tales of Tomorrow.  I tried to watch that Southland Tales movie by the Donnie Darko director today & had to shut it off after fifteen minutes because it was so bad.

Got a bunch of work done for QRD today.  Should go live tomorrow.  Just have to write the intro & make a cover.

I have in a bunch of tracks for the Christmas comp & hope to get that done by next week.

Last Night’s Dream:
A tall old man shows up at the viewing of my grandmother’s body.  I ask him who he is & he just stares at me.  I go up to hit him, but he’s tall enough that I can’t even reach to hit him in the face.

Southland Tales is horrible but i still find it enjoyable but not because of the plot or the acting but little subtleties that make no difference in the movie.

    • I couldn’t deal with the voice over narrator. & I thought the quantity of minor stars that I try to figure out who they are was distracting. & of course way too many characters. & it said it was over two hours.

  2. GoddakkAttack says:

plus, isn’t the lead role Stiffler from American Pie?

    • I think they’d introduced like 20 characters in 15 minutes so I couldn’t tell you which one of them starred. I ended up watching Woody Harrelson’s Defendor instead, it’s playing free on YouTube right now…..

Remora, Lost Kisses, QRD, The Outer Limits, Dreams

I finally figured a work around for the Remora video by splicing it into two parts & then stitching them together. So here it is, in all its glory.

I got another rough script for an issue of Lost Kisses done. I need to start getting some issues finished instead of just continuing to start them.

I got another interview for the next QRD done. Sorry for the big delays on this issue.

Here’s an episode of The Outer Limits about what happens when you get a human brain outside of a body.

Last Night’s Dream:
I’m making burritos & I’m out of most of the things I would put in them & they end up being half sour cream.

I’m walking home from the bank at the mall & a teenage kid makes some kind of motions to me like he wants to rob me. I laugh & wave my hand at him. Then he pulls out a haircutting scissor in his right hand while he starts frantically text messaging on his phone in his left hand. I say, “Are you fucking kidding me?” & grab his right hand & plunge his scissor into his neck & just walk away & go home. When I get home I notice that I have a bunch of text messages on my phone & presumably they’re all from the kid because they’re about him stabbing me & me losing hit points & rolling dice & shit like that.

Not The News, Drinkify, Thorn1

So my last couple of days in Myrtle Beach I discovered this bizarre show that follows their nightly news called Not The News.  I can’t quite decide if it is awful or awesome.

Nathan Amundson (Rivulets) just emailed me about this site Drinkify that makes up drinks about bands.  I think the oddest might be that Small Life Form is water.

Here’s a new video from Thorn1:

  1. Nic says:

I typed in The God Machine and it says: “1 bottle Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey. Serve neat. Stir vigorously. Garnish with twist of grapefruit”.
Oddly it could not be more appropriate in this case (apart form that twist of grapefruit…)

  2. GoddakkAttack says:

that’s funny about SLF. i’m actually surprised Plumerai = Brooklyn Lager. but i guess it makes sense.

  3. I’m most surprised that it has it for just about every Silber artist, but if you just make something up it doesn’t give an answer.

    • GoddakkAttack says:

i think it has to find the music on Last.fm or something. it seems that way to me based on the images it pulled for Goddakk & Plumerai.

  4. Nic says:

Vlor: 1 oz. Microbrew + 1 oz. Nordic Mist + 6 oz. Lemon sour
burMonter: 8 oz. Maker’s Mark Bourbon

    I’ll go with burMonter.

  5. GoddakkAttack says:

ha, i totally forgot about burmonter.
i need to find out which band is tequilla cuz it makes her clothes fall off.

  6. Nic says:

The last one, I promise: MWVM is 8 oz. Marijuana.
Not sure if it makes her clothes fall off though…

Remora, Lost Kisses, Dreams

So the cold I’ve been fighting off for a week or so finally kicked in.  Which negated the ability to do the live Remora record at this time.  Maybe in a couple months I’ll come back down to Myrtle Beach to try to make it happen.  I did manage to get a track done for the Christmas comp called “Teddy Bear” that’s an instrumental.

I wrote a first draft of what might end up being the final story of the Lost Kisses time travel story arc.  It’s the piece that ties together how the time travel technology works.  Of course the story is written in such a way that the issues can be read in any order.  Or at least that’s what I’m trying to do.

Doing some research on bloggers to contact.  Going through all the folks who contribute to Hype Machine to see who I’m missing.

Last Night’s Dream:
I’m laying on the floor & there’s a spilled vase of flowers lying inches from my face.

Remora, Car, Dreams

So the Remora shows went pretty well.  I’m hoping to get a chance to do some recording in the next couple of days of the live set with this backing band (there are live recordings of the shows, but I think those are better as personal artifacts than being released).

The cop still hasn’t filled out the paperwork for my accident.  Kind of frustrating.  I already had it towed to the shop.

Last Night’s Dreams:
My body is found dead in bed.  There’s a big black scar on my chest from being struck by lightning.

I find my grandmother’s body in a hospital.  Not only is her body still alive, she’s conscious.  She tells me she wants to go home & I disconnect the stuff from her & pick her up & start carrying her out of the hospital.  She’s the lightest she’s ever been, but I’m still not sure how far I’ll be able to carry her.

At the end of a show I’ve worn through two thirds of an orange tortex guitar pick.  That’s not supposed to happen.

I wake up sobbing.  No one is there to care or notice.

  1. GoddakkAttack says:

what kind of podunk town do you live in that it takes a couple weeks for the cops to do their jobs?

also is the last line of this blog a dream or reality

  2. I wonder the same thing about this town. Maybe in a podunk town they’d fire a cop for incompetence.

That was a dream, but both that & the guitar pick dream I thought might’ve been true.

Remora & The Outer Limits

So I made it down to Myrtle Beach to practice for the Remora shows.  My fingers on my left hand are sore, my right arm just below the elbow hurts, & my throat feels a little rough from not having practiced in a long time.   I’m sure I haven’t had a day where I sang & played guitar for more or less five hours straight in at least a year.  I guess I just need to roll with it & hope it doesn’t get worse after practicing again tonight & then playing the two shows.

I think I have a new favorite episode of The Outer Limits.  It’s called “The Duplicate Man” & is about clones & highly evolved alien murderers.

Crap & Masks

So my beat up car is still sitting in the driveway waiting for the police to do the official paperwork about the accident so I can get it into the shop & get the rental car & get down to Myrtle Beach to practice with the full Remora band.

I was practicing & one of my pedals seemed to kinda crap out.  Fooled around with the potentiometer & it seems to be working again.

Here’s a video I found about making helmets & masks:

Crash & Comics & Video & Fog

So I was driving to Kirk Adam’s open studio thing tonight (a few people gather to paint, draw, etc in his warehouse space at the same time on Monday nights & I haven’t been able to attend previously because of my family obligations) & some dude took a left turn from the right hand lane & peeled off the front of my car.  We’ll see what all happens with it.  Hopefully just a headache that will be solved in a week.  Feels like I had a pretty fucking rough past few weeks.  So I hope things don’t come off as me just complaining on this blog.

So I tried to rework the music video with the images reduced in size & I still couldn’t get it to render.  Maybe I’m getting something simple wrong about it.  I’m going to try doing it with a different software or different computer in the next couple of days.

I got a second draft of XLK done & sent to Nick Marino.  Received the art for REH #2 from Andrew White.  Started writing Lost Kisses #24.  Finally started drawing the Lost Kisses September 11 Special.  So a lot of comic stuff happening for me today.

Peter Aldrich sent me a link to this video that I think may be of interest to plenty of you.

  1. GoddakkAttack says:

you know someone pointed out to me the twitter for #dadboners and it made me think that LK would work in the twitter format.

just sayin. also i just wanted to use this as an opportunity to post dadboner on your sight/site.

  2. I actually wanted to try to do some Twitter style stories, but then Tweet-U-Later stopped working & I also don’t think you can see a Twitter stream in reverse order so the story would read reversed after the initial entries which might be odd.

    • GoddakkAttack says:

it’s only odd if you look at it from the perspective of reading a linear story.

however as someone that gets daily twitter updates/feeds the story will make sense. you just have to phrase things so that it’s not necessarily you have to read one to get the other. so that each also works as a stand alone.

      • GoddakkAttack says:

also i don’t mean i get daily twitter updates feeds , i mean in general someone used to the format

  3. There’s a place that does Twitter poetry that actually isn’t as horrible as it sounds like it might be. Maybe I’ll work on it.

YouTube, Video

So I got an email from YouTube today that they decided I now qualify for ad sharing with them (they must have lowered their standards as a few months ago they told me I needed to average 10,000 views per video to qualify).  Not sure if I want to put ads in my videos in general.  I guess I’ll wait & see how crappy they look & if they earn enough money to get me over their payment threshold.

I finished taking the photos for my stop motion video, but for some reason I can’t get the thing to render.  Spent about 8 hours trying to get it to render properly.  I’ll try to rebuild the video from the images tomorrow & see if that fixes things.

Internet Promotion from Zero in 2011

Recently a friend of mine was asking where he should post up stuff for his brand new band (no web presence yet at all) given the decline in MySpace.  So I came up with this as my list in order of importance.

1)      YouTube – It seems like YouTube is the only place where non-musicians are excited about music & go to it & share things.  Making videos can obviously be a hassle, but plenty of bands have videos that are just a slide show or even a static image.  I have to admit it does seem like it’s getting to the point where having a “video guy” in your band is as important as having a “recording guy” in the band.

2)      Soundcloud – I sometimes look at webcharts on Alexa & the like.  Soundcloud seems to be the music service with the most upward momentum in traffic.  Also a lot of reviewers seem to like the Soundcloud dropbox service & the ability to embed tracks in their blogs.

3)      Reverbnation – The main reason to use Reverbnation is that they have somewhat teamed up with Facebook & they have a pretty decent free emailing list service & the ability to embed your player in reviews.  It also seems like this is where touring bands currently go to when looking for bands to play with in a city they’re headed to over any other sites right now.

4)      Facebook – I nor any of the bands I’ve worked with have had a lot of luck with Facebook as far as generating actual new fans or sales, however the events feature seems to be one of the main places where regular people find out about shows.

5)      MySpace – I know, people have been saying MySpace is dead for a couple of years now.  While it isn’t the socializing network it once was, it’s still a place people trust to go to & a place where other bands can find you if they want to get in touch about booking a show.

6)      Personal Website – Whether you want to get your own domain or a Blogger or WordPress or Tumblr thing going, I think it’s important to get your own site up more or less as soon as possible so that you have a homebase you have control over.  But with a new band it might be more trouble than it’s worth until you know things are really going.  I would suggest getting something that offers an RSS feed.

7)      Last FM – I’ll be honest, I’ve never really used Last FM; but I know a lot of people love it & so I assume it has some value as a way for people to somewhat passively stumble upon your music.

8)      Twitter – I love & hate Twitter.  I love it’s ability to be embedded everywhere & have whatever you post in it populate to your status on MySpace, Reverbnation, Facebook, & even a widget on your own website.  I hate that I have not yet figured out a way to really get people to interact on it & of course it doesn’t have anyway to play music within itself directly.

9)      Bandcamp – Everyone but me seems to love Bandcamp.  I’ve yet to meet a non-musician excited about it.  I’ve had some problems with emails for downloads going into spam boxes.  Their terms of agreement have thresholds for how many downloads a month you can have before you need to pay a fee (or at least they did last time I checked them).  But everyone but me seems to love them

10)  Obviously I could go on forever I suppose, but I think there’s a limit where your web presence gets too hard to keep up with, especially when you aren’t even sure how long your band will last.

So I asked my friend Kristel Jax of IT³ her opinion of the importance of things today & here’s her response:

The above list seems pretty good so I’m not going to get into that much, except I don’t know anybody who uses Reverbnation & I’d slide WordPress & Tumblr (Tumblr’s better) up higher. I’m disappointed by Bandcamp too – people get confused by the $0 minimum & the cut BC takes (15%) is pretty high. It’s okay, though. If you’re going to use MySpace, keep it simple, like a highway billboard. Link to the sites you’ll actually use.

My advice is more general. You started doing what you’re doing for a reason that wasn’t just amassing a lot of plays & listeners; so when you take your music online, keep focused on why you started making art in the first place. Instead of just setting up a few profiles & spamming them to your friends & local promoters, get connected to other artists you find interesting – & I don’t mean friending the ghost profiles of bands you like on MySpace. Creep blogs, check out labels, & look around the groups on Soundcloud, Facebook, & Last.fm for stuff you think is killing it, then chat up musicians, bloggers, fans, & whoever. Don’t be annoying, just be real. Friend people who are doing what inspires you, or who are into the same niches. Figure out where you stand in the communities you think are relevant right now. Hang out.

Don’t only post your own stuff on your social networks, post the stuff you’re loving & post the stuff that’s on your mind. Write reviews if you feel like it. Make remixes. Trade art. Talk about stuff that makes you happy & stuff that pisses you off. You’ll create a community around yourself & your band that enriches you as people & as artists, as well as your fans. Then even if your band doesn’t last out the year, at least you had a good time.

Think of the internet as your band’s second home, but don’t think about it too much. Try to remember how green your band is & don’t expect everyone you link or friend to listen or check you out.

Whatever you do, stay away from Sonicbids. Nothing sucks shit like Sonicbids.

Brian John Mitchell has run Silber Records since 1996 & the zine gone webzine QRD since 1994.  He is perhaps best known for his music in the band Remora.  He runs a daily blog about running a label where this article originally appeared.

Kristel Jax has run IT³ (I’m Trying, I’m Trying, I’m Trying) since 2008. More than a label or zine publisher or live show promotions company, IT³ is all these things & more. She makes music in tweenoise duo Alpha Couple.

  1. GoddakkAttack says:

the bandcamp is good because of the control you have over the look and feel, the embed and sharing options. the fact that the money they take is minimal an not up front stuff like that and the ability to sell physical and digital and the digital comes in a variety of formats. the limit is bad i guess if you arent selling much but if you are i guess you shouldnt complain about the small fee. mostly its free and they take the 15% out of sales so you never really pay out of pocket which is nice too. i mean they have to make money somehow and with the amount of free dloads it makes sense

also goodluck staying away from sonicbids i u want to do anything related to the big music fests showcases

    • Bandcamp has a free download limit where they start charging a fee. I’m not sure exactly where it lies, but I’m sure if you get a review on Pitchfork you’ll get screwed over it for a couple hundred bucks. Which I have no problem with, sure they deserve to make money. My bigger problem with them is the whole experience of the only album I tried to get from them (a Chris Olley download only thing a couple years ago) needing to try to have the link sent to three different email addresses before getting one to put it in my spam box instead of automatically deleting it.

The thing with Sonic Bids & others like it are they are collecting a fee for a possible appearance on something where 90% of the line-up is pre-established & not associated with them at all. Plus there’s the whole thing of festivals these days usually being fairly useless if you want to play for more than 20 people as you end up playing head to head against Guided by Voices & The Flaming Lips.

  2. GoddakkAttack says:

you don’t automatically get charged. you get to a limit and have to buy more “credits” or whatever they call it…power ups or some such. Your issue seems like it has more to do with your email rather than bandcamp.

…the point is that every single one of these things are now exclusively sonicbids submission pretty much. So it’s not only a scam it’s a monopoly.

    • Yeah, I’d agree it was a problem with my email account if it only didn’t come through on my silbermedia email address (not even to the spam box), but it also got blocked on my juno address (not in the spam box) & then it was in my aol spam box for my third email attempt. Hopefully it works better now or they at least updated it so you don’t have to check your email & you go directly to a download page as that’s what makes sense anyway as I know so many people who’s Paypal email is essentially their spam non-checking email.

I don’t think those things are exclusively Sonic Bids, just exclusively Sonic Bids for unsolicited stuff. If a label pays for a label showcase thing for SXSW/CMJ, they can pick the bands without them going through a submission process. At least it was like that two years ago. I kinda gave up on bothering looking into live stuff a while ago…..
