Recording & Stereofying

Recorded some more Remora demos, all just little guitar ideas that may or may not ever make it into the catalog; but it’s a good idea to have a back catalog of riffs for when the well runs dry again.

Did a stereofying remix for a Sarah June song for her new album (she predominantly records in mono).  Waiting to see what she thinks of it & if I should do more songs in that style.  Made my own little stereofying plug-in for it, so that feels pretty good.

Anyone who hasn’t checked out the Lycia MySpace page lately, there’s some new unreleased material from some of the aborted Lycia reboots over the past few years.  It feels good to hear it even if the albums aren’t coming….

Still trying to get the script for Worms #4 to work.  It’s hard to figure out how to get the ultra-weird stuff to happen without it drastically changing the voice of the story.

I have two Remora shows in the same market in the next week.  Should I do the same show twice or do different things stylistically?

mix master

Finished (I think) mixing & mastering the Vlor disc.  Going to check with all ten other members/contributors for suggestions.  I think it might be a solid album, though it is hard to judge my own work at times.  Hard to believe how long I can spend on one release sometimes.  I think I started it in 2006?

The Lost Kisses DVD will hopefully be completed & ready for manufacturing next week.

Jon DeRosa told me the new Aarktica album is progressing along slow but steady.  I heard a few tracks & it should be great.  Fans of No Solace in Sleep should be pretty pleased.

More Work Done & More Work to Go

I’m just about caught up with my emails, so that’s a good feeling.

I’ve gotten about five or six interviews back for the upcoming QRD Father’s Day Special & I editted the first one.  So I’m pretty happy to get that going.

Spent about five hours today contacting everyone I know who’s in one of the cities where Hotel Hotel will be playing in the next couple weeks.  Hopefully that time will result in an additional 20 people attending & I feel like that would make up for the time spent.  Plus I think it actually generated one sale directly, so if it makes a few more it’ll definitely have been worth it.  Anyone have ideas of places I should post a tour on the internet that could actually generate attendance?

Cut & assembled the first issue of Just a Man.  Pretty stoked about that.

I just realized I’m 9 comics behind on the avatars.  Not making them free doesn’t seem to helpful with sales, so maybe I should put them up.

Busy sounds better than behind

Recorded some parts for Vlor last night in some last minute collaborations with Jon DeRosa because I wanted the disc to be a few minutes longer & he had some extra parts around from the new Aarktica he’s working on.  Hopefully I’ll finish mixing them tomorrow.

I also finished the layout for Just a Man & printed it out the first batch, but have yet to cut it up & assemble it.

I’ve somehow gotten about 150 emails behind by spending a couple days working on Vlor, Just a Man, & Muscle Mass; so hopefully I’ll get back to some of you in a day or two.

I’ve been listening to the Gutter Trash Podcast lately.  It’s two guys drinking & talking about movies & comics.  It makes me feel like I have friends in the same way Myster Science Theater 3000 used to.

slow shift

I got all the artwork in for my new western mini-comic Just A Man.  More info on it in a couple days when I finish the layout.

Got a bunch of demos started for Muscle Mass, gotta put them on my computer & send them to the rest of the band to see what’s going to happen.

Not sure exactly what else is up.  It felt like there would be more to write before I started this entry.  I do feel like I’m getting back towards a period of my life of actually getting things done.

a day in my life

Gathered a list of  folks to send messages to about the upcoming shows for artists on the  label.  Hopefully it will make a difference of two extra people per show.  Trying to be realistic with low numbers.

Listened to the new Vlor album & the track order was clearly out of wack.  Hopefully that will be repaired in a couple days.

The new Moodring is on its way to manufacturing now.  I guess I need to get a webpage going for them.

I got back the first QRD Father’s Day interview.  Nice when things seem a little smooth.

If I get my act together I’ll start working on the Muscle Mass demos tonight.

Starting the Next QRD

So I started sending off for the Father’s Day QRD.  11 people agreeing to interviews so far.  Once again, any musician dads reading this that want to take part should give me a shout.

I keep spending time researching stuff for promotions lately rather than creating content to promote.  I need to shift my priorities around.  The intellectual content is where it’s at, not the reviews or even the sales.

The Remora show last night where I played five guitars at once was pretty sweet/fun sonically.  People are telling me it should be my main rig from here on out, but it is way too much work.  Though I am thinking about using my dilrhuba as a drone for the next Small Life Form show.

I think the CD burner in my laptop might be busted.  I guess that’s bound to happen as much as I’ve lugged the thing around in the past five years.

Some Work Done

It’s always great to log into the MySpace account & see that a couple of blog entries have been deleted through whatever magic the work.  Maybe I should start using a real blog….

So I had an interview at Comicon.com about my mini-comics that you guys might want to read if you have some free time.

I checked out my webstats the other day & the month of April strangely was really low on traffic.  I’m not sure what to make of that.  I mean, sales being down is one thing, but low website traffic is kinda weird.  Of course I do suppose I haven’t put out anything new in a long time & even the new QRD I didn’t promote as heavily as I sometimes do (partially because two of the interviews still haven’t been received a month later).

Listened to a few of the rough mixes of the new Aarktica, pretty sweet stuff.

Worked some more on mastering the Vlor yesterday.  I need to listen to it a few times to see if it’s done or not.

Been doing some work lately trying to increase the promo list on both the comic & music side of things.  There’s going to be too much going on when I have all these things coming out at once.

Hotel Hotel is about to go on tour.  I hope some of you get to check them out.

Today was a day

I got in the first twelve panels for the western mini-comic I’m working on.  It’s called Just a Man.  It’s about a farmer looking for revenge & struggling with religion.

I got invited for a couple of compilations today.  Always flattering.

I don’t know if everyone who cares already knows, but there’s talk of a Swans reunion.  I’m not even sure what that means exactly when you look at how large the cast of swans was over the years & how diverse the music was.  I think I might be more excited with Body Lovers #2.

I got an interesting little thank you note from Casey Miller:
“The Electric Bird Noise album is described as ‘soothing’ on the card you sent.  Evidentally someone else in the universe finds the sound of banshees wailing in a howling void soothing, which makes me happy.”

Sent out some more follow up for the most recent issues of Lost Kisses & Worms.  I’m still working on writing the new Worms.  I thought I new what was going to happen, but I seem to be a little stalled out.

I had a tour dream (read as work dream) about somebody stealing a cash box & I took the box back from the guy & cornered him with three bandmates say, “You have a choice, you can decide which one of us is going to beat the shit out of you.”

Spent some time today working with Nic Slaton on the QRD TV demo.  There are a lot of things I need to figure out to make it really possible to make it work & look good enough to put my brand on.  We’ll see & I’ll let you know when we figure things out.

Sometimes the internet irks me

So lately Borders has been my book store of choice (I know I should go to the indie one 5 miles from my house, but Borders is next to my post office).  So I figured I should add their online services to the links I get kickbacks for.  While signing up their affiliate program is through Commision Junction, which I know I have an account with because I have gotten checks from them in the past (though the last one I got was probably in January of 2008).  So I go to Commision Junction & they’ve closed my account without any notification & not only that, they won’t let me sign back up.  Now I understand why some places like Musician’s Friend & Barnes & Nobles stopped working with them.  My links from my website still work, so I imagine someone is still being charged for any clicks; but I’m not being paid.  What jacks….

A while ago (mentioned in one of the blogs deleted by MySpace) I did another pass to finish the mastering of Carta’s new album.  I think it’s done, I should know in another day or so.  Just working on the artwork.

Loaded up some stuff for getting Remora’s Derivative to have digital distro.  I still haven’t really done the promo I need with that one because I want to co-op it with Remora’s Mecha.  Hopefully that will be out one day soon.

Still having some minor issues with the Lost Kisses DVD & I’m sick to death of working on it, which just makes it take longer to finish.  I think I will never work on a DVD project again in my life.  I’m pretty happy with the idea that technology is going to die.

I’m going to start sending out questions for musician/artist dads to be interviewed for QRD’s Father’s Day issue (a follow up from the one two years ago).  So if you know anyone I should interview, let me know their contact info.
