Mics/Power/Distro/Demos/Free Discs for Help

Granted I have no idea how speakers/microphones work.  But the pzm device I was wanting to use as a speaker (because, hey, it originally was a speaker) seems to only work as a microphone?  So it’s going to alter my plans slightly for the wooden reverb. Also, why is it that when I want to switch mini-plug stereo to quarter inch I can’t just plug it in to a single adapter?  Or maybe I just never have the right adapter.  Anyway, it’s frustrating.  I made this thing that daisy chains eight small stereo mics that I was planning to use for ripping off some of Tore Boe’s acoustic laptop ideas.  Though I have my doubt as to how well it will work.

Got in the power supply for my laptop that was the “cheap one guaranteed to work.” & of course it doesn’t work.  Ordered the $80 from the certified repair shop today instead.  I really don’t get this crap about the adapters not working properly & whatnot.  I actually have the same problem with certain pedals.  Why is it that some pedals hum when I use a universal power supply, but the proprietary one with the same specs written on the outside sounds crystal clear?

Got an unanticipated significant order from a distro I haven’t worked with in a couple years.  Pretty exciting.  We’ll see what happens.  It’d be nice to get a new distro that can move a few hundred units a year so I stay at the same level even as the other distros have their sales ween a bit.

Wrote some intro bits for the various series for the mini-comics sampler.

I was looking around for a rollerball/trackball/whatever-they-call it mouse today.  Did they stop making them?  I only went to staples & Radio Shack, but both had zero?  Anyway, if somebody has an extra one, let me know; I’m ready to upgrade to 1995 technology.

I posted the offer on Twitter the other day & no one seemed to respond, but if anyone is interested in trying to alter the code to the Silber banner so that the look in Firefox (which I like) appears in Internet Explorer (where the words are scrunched up) correctly while still appearing correctly in Firefox – I’m offering a 5 Silber CDs & a t-shirt reward.

Today I got a demo in the mail that was just a CD.  No personal note, no one sheet, no nothing.  Umm, not that I’m attacking you personally if you’re reading this, but what am I supposed to do with the disc?  I mean is it a gift or a label submission or something you want me to master or are you trying to get me to write a press release or are you trying to score an elusive interview with QRD?

The past few days I’ve been starting to get “models” asking to be my friend on Facebook.  Which means robots are over there now.  Which means it’s going to be even less useful than it already was.

bass note hangover?

Worked on one of my “crazy new recording ideas” that are top top secret so I can’t explain it so it’s not stolen before I’m finished.   But here’s the thing I’d like to warn you about, even at low volume exposure to bass notes that are close enough together to “beat” for 4.5 hours ends up making you feel hungover, wasted, & dehydrated.  Maybe it’s from something else somehow, but it seems that was the thing that was “different” about yesterday.  Please note for all of you used to the live show, no beers were involved in the recording.

ATCs Sold Out?

I made up the wax packs for the ATC project.  I had already made a couple pre-sales & I just realized that after artist copies the series is already sold out!  Series two will be this fall.  Going to shift around the way it works slightly.  More news on that in a couple weeks when I have all the kinks worked out.Cut about 300 bags/sleeves for the mini-comics & assembled about 30 books.  I need to figure out a good method of storage for them to keep them in order for selling them.  There’s about 30 different issues of the various series now, so rummaging through a box for a particular one is getting a little old.

Going to try some work on my wooden reverb again.  Going to try some alternate methods than the original idea.  May result in a Small Life Form album if it works.

Comics/ATCs/Wooden Reverb

Got the art done & scanned in for Lost Kisses & Ultimate Lost Kisses entries in the mini-comic sampler.  The mouse on my old computer I’m really not able to operate well enough to edit the images as I’d like.Got an email from Melissa Gardner & on the XO story for the sampler I’m just going to use some art from previous issues.

Scanned in the artwork for all the cards for the Silber ATC Project.  Less contributors than I would’ve liked, but I think I’ll do another set in the fall. I’ll have to re-work some things about it as far as how to get enough cards to not just be managing a trading service.  Because I’d like to get some out to fans.  It’s interesting that some people seem like they knock their ten cards out in an hour & others look like they spend at least an hour per card.  I’ll let you know when I have scans of them up.  Tomorrow I’ll assemble the packages so I can debut them at SPACE.  I think I only have two extra packs to sell, but I think about half the artists will be there.

Got an email from Kimberlee Traub that Worms will be slowing down for awhile while she’s focused on gigs that make more money.  Which totally makes sense.  I wish I could give her a check for a couple hundred bucks per issue, but as it is I haven’t gotten any mini-comic to make money after expenses.  Maybe after Dave Sim does his bit about me on Cerebus TV it will change things around.

I tried some more stuff for my “wooden reverb” & I don’t know if I’m cut out for making this kinda thing.  I’ve only had two successful solder projects in my life (both to a casio keyboard, one to give it an output jack & another to change the single note playback button into a foot pedal; of course the keyboard broke later) & I’ve probably tried about a dozen over the past fifteen years.Got an email from Bob Freville that the Hemo movie is getting the test pressing done next week (for those of you who don’t recall, it’s a vampire movie that probably has about a dozen Silber songs in the soundtrack).

Tomorrow’s “I still don’t have my power supply for my PC” work includes working on some questions for the QRD re-launch.  So I’m feeling like I’m getting some things done that have been neglected of late.

Nothing can stop the Juggernaut

Got everything done for taxes & sending out band royalties.

Ordered a new power supply for my laptop (fingers croosed on it working).

Got new drafts done for the Lost Kisses & Ultimate Lost Kisses for the sampler done, just have to put in the pictures.

Tried to work on my wooden reverb idea, but I broke the wire off the pzm thing.  Try to solder it back together to test tomorrow.

Got an idea for doing a pretty ridiculous sequel to Remora’s “Ensoulment” record (which I suppose in itself is a sequel to “Ambient Drones for One Guitar”).  I don’t want to give it away before it happens as I don’t want someone to rip off the idea before I launch mine into the world.  So yeah, that does mean I’m working on about seven Remora concept albums at once; but once things calm down a little it’ll make sense.  I was also thinking, what to do with some leftover money I had last month, I didn’t hesitate so much and didn’t think much about it either so I decided to put that money in play, I registered and played at daftar pragmatic slot to try my luck and boy did it work. I realize that I should’ve made Remora a cash cow flagship band on the label instead of leaving it as “the label owner’s solo project.”  So making up for the lost recording time of the past fifteen years might take a while.

Moodring &a Mecha News

So there was a line of screwy code & I needed to update all the pages on my site so that they could use the banner properly.  Also there is an issue with getting it too look like I want it in Firefox or Internet Explorer (seemingly both is not an option, which I suppose is why so many people have flash driven websites).  I went with Firefox since that’s what I use.

Did some little adjustments to a lot of webpages with errors on them.  Still have to finish going through the artist pages, but I’m a bit worn out on it at the moment.

Made the digital download version for the Moodring disc & I have it up & for sale.  Just $5.

Got in the artwork for the Mecha comic today.  So I really need to get my act together on the music associated with it.  It’s on my to do list & getting close to the top of it.

My “to do list” is staying a steady length, which is better than it getting longer….

Power/Computer Problems

So this morning I’m working & all of a sudden my computer says “plug in power supply to avoid immediate shutdown.”  I look & it is plugged in.  My clock is on so power’s on in the house.  But the little green LED on the power supply is off.  Which means the power supply went bad.  Maybe that’s why my battery hasn’t been able to charge properly the past couple of months.  Anyway, it’s old & finding a replacement power supply is a bit of a hassle (note: I got a new power supply two years ago & when I Googled the company (Jacob’s Parts) to see if it was under warranty 9 of the top ten results were about their adapters crapping out within a year or two).  So until I get a new power supply I guess I don’t need to worry about getting a lot of my work done because I don’t have the ability to do it.  Good news for some work getting done, bad news for other work getting done.

Work that should get done:
Shooting some crappy video ideas
Taxes
Band Royalties
New Drafts for Lost Kisses & Ultimat Lost Kisses in the mini-comic sampler
Assemble ATC packs

Work that will be a hassle to get done:
Everything Else

Blog before Sleep

So today I started doing the new MySpace marketing campaign.  We’ll see what happens as far as if people who are fans of Kranky, 4AD, & Bella Union really would make sense as fans of Silber.  It’ll take about two weeks to get through it & then I’ll move on to whatever my next promo will be.

I made a new advertisement oriented MySpace avatar.  It felt like if I’m contacting a bunch of strangers about the label, it makes more sense to have something about the label in that spot instead of gags about growing a beard.

I put the banner up on most of the website today.  Need to go through & see if I screwed up any of my code while doing it.  There’s a bunch of little things I need to do still & of course I still need to make the back catalog available in the download shop & that will take quite a bit of time as I’m trying to have nice little PDF books with my downloads.

Got the rest of my sketch cards done for the ATC project.

Got in the artwork from Kim Traub for the new issue of Worms.  Haven’t had a chance to mess with it yet.

Alexa says that Silber has had a popularity boost recently.  I wonder if it’s the ads I placed at Brainwashed/Foxy Digitalis/Delusions of Adequacy?  Unfortunately no correlated sales spike.

Drawing/Videos/Movies

I started putting the updated Silber banner & mp3 player technology around the site.  I’m now about a fourth through doing that.  I’m told the banner still sometimes has issues with Internet Explorer on a non-full sized window, but I’m unable to recreate the problem without making the window significantly small.  Though maybe it involves people doing the stuff to over-ride text sizes or something.  Who knows.  I’m happy enough with it to let it roll.

Got some more cards done for the Silber ATC project.  I’m just drawing random little things with a sharpy marker & I don’t think I’ve done little doodle sketches in ten years or so.  It’s nice & free feeling.  I should do it more often.

Talked to Silber intern Ben Collins today & he’s building an analogue synthesizer (the kind without keyboard controls) from scratch.  I wish I knew how to do things like that.

Doing more research on promoting the music videos.  I thought I would get it all done this past week, but I didn’t.  So, maybe this week?  Anyone want to help over the internet searching for folks on YouTube who have playlists that Silber music videos should be added to?

I saw George Romero’s Survival of the Dead last night.  I might try to write a long piece about why I didn’t care for it in a couple of days.

Happy Easter.

Survival of the Dead (spoilers?)

Survival of the Dead

So it’s the new George Romero movie.  Dawn of the Dead has been such an integral part to my brain since I saw it when I was eight & because it’s shot like a guerilla documentary I couldn’t tell if it was real or not.  Still it seemed like a more hopeful apocalypse than the one that I had seen in The Day After.  So that’s the back-story of why I keep going back for more Romero.

Romero’s last zombie movie Diary of the Dead seems like it was pretty universally panned, but I thought it was a return to form for what he did that I loved in movies like Night of The Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, & The Crazies.  So I was pretty hopeful for this one.  The re-use of a couple of bit characters from Diary of the Dead seemed to point to the importance of Diary to Romero within his zombie mythology.  The opening bit about people’s willingness to shoot loved ones in the head was interesting enough & I think was meant to be a major part of the social commentary that makes Romero more than just a hack, but instead just kind of floundered.  The value of money versus the value of life was another clear piece of social commentary that didn’t seem fully explored (though of course it was touched on in Dawn of the Dead well enough).  Those were the two ideas that were what I would’ve been interested in the movie for.

Now what I had a problem with was despite being better than 90% of zombie films (not too much CGI, doesn’t look like something I could’ve shot in my yard, has decent actors, doesn’t have so many main characters that I get them confused), it felt like Romero fan fiction more than a Romero movie (same complaint I had with Land of the Dead).  This was the third Romero movie in a row that had a scene with zombies in water over their heads, I’m not sure if this is supposed to be interesting or cool or whatever; but I didn’t care when it happened in the Italian zombie movies in the 1980s & I don’t care now.  There were quite a few comedic zombie kills (head completely explodes from a single shot & then a bit of the scalp lands on the neck, shot in the belly with a flare & then the head lights on fire, fire extinguisher shot into the mouth & the eyes pop out to look like a scene from Shrek), which isn’t really something I think of happening in Romero movies – his comedic elements aren’t usually this slapstick, they usually are making fun of humans being jerks (e.g. seltzer bottles the motorcycle gang sprays at zombies in Dawn of the Dead).  The main plot was about keeping your loved dead ones alive, an idea that’s been explored quite a bit (touched on in pretty much all of Romero’s work, though more thoroughly explored in some other films in the genre like The Dead Next Door or Return of the Living Dead III).  So the people are trying to keep their dead loved ones alive in case there’s a cure, which makes sense enough.  In most zombie pieces people end up needing to kill people to feed their loved ones, which is an interesting idea because of course they’re killing real people to keep a ghost of a person alive; in this one their trying to get zombies to eat live stock – pigs & horses.  While I know that within the mythology the zombies generally prefer to eat live human flesh, they were shown eating a mouse way back in the original Night of the Living Dead, so I don’t see this as a huge thing moving the mythology forward.  There was a bit with a living twin & a living dead twin which could have been an interesting story to develop, but seemed like an idea that came out of nowhere halfway through the movie.

Nothing new, no real social commentary, not even a Milla Jovovich to stare at.  Probably the folks who got into zombies from the Resident Evil franchise will like this fine.  Me?  I’ll just pretend it didn’t happen, the same as I did with Land of the Dead.

One Response to Survival of the Dead (spoilers?)
