Blah & a great short film.

I don’t know where my days go.

Spent some time working on mastering the Rivulets demos & boosting the volume mainly seemed to add some distortions & raise the noise floor.  I wonder sometimes what the real mastering guys do with the Alan Lomax recordings.  Then again, they always sound like crap fidelity wise & are quiet with a high noise floor.  Still makes me feel a little down on myself.

Booked my time for going to Myrtle Beach in August to record with Brian McKenzie (Electric Bird Noise).

Did some work posting about QRD on some newsgroup & forums & such.  Don’t know if it will increase traffic or not.

Anybody seen this awesome short film?

Old Obsessions & Some Other Junk

Yesterday I finished reading a comic anthology I bought that was the first dozen issues of Marvel Comics from 70 years ago.  It’s interesting because there are some comic rules they experiment with & have really poor results (panel layout sometimes is difficult to read & individual issues are an overwhelming number of stories (usually at least five)) & other things that are pretty interesting.  Heroes kill villains without care or repurcussion.  A story with a plot long enough to be two films is crammed into 8 pages.  Nearly every story is self-contained or at most a two parter.  I have a few collections of public domain comics on DVD & I guess I should start reading them as I find them more fascinating than modern comics.  Or maybe it’s just my obsession with the idea that the high point of american art in all fields was between WWI & WWII.  Next fiction book I’m reading is going back to some more Robert E Howard, because we all know he is the best.

I got some more corporate kickback sponsors approved for QRD.  I also got a few more interviews & promises for interviews in for QRD #42.

Got some work done towards getting some of the upcoming digital releases ready.  It’s taking me longer to make it happen than it should.  I suppose in part because I’m a little scared of launching it, because I don’t know what I’ll do if it fails & I really don’t want to embarrass myself in front of the bands I’m working with on it.

Got the MySpace message campaign started for the PD Wilder/Carta/Sarah June/Summer of Glaciers show this Thursday in San Francisco.  Usually I don’t bother to do the MySpace messaging promo for shows, but I figure with three Silber artists on one bill I should do it.

I was watching Ancient Astronauts on the History Channel & they talked to Dr. C. Scott Littleton who I interviewed way back in QRD #2!

Comp Tracks, Paperwork, Teenagers, Gears, Blender

Just mixed/mastered a couple of songs for a potential comp appearance.  One Remora & one new Vlor.  They definitely blur the differences between the two projects this time.  As the Remora pretty much sounds like Windsor for the Derby on Difference & Repetition which was basically the whole goal of middle era Vlor.  Meanwhile the Vlor sounds closer to the Stooges than shoegazer.

I filled out some paperwork to theoretically get paid by some music placement folks.  We’ll see if it happens.

It sounds like a teenager in my neighborhood got a new groove box & their parents left town, but maybe I’m just projecting what I want to happen in my life twenty years ago.  I might try to record what it sounds like from in my room & see if it’s something useful.

Sent out about 100 messages to guitarists for QRD #42.

If anyone reading this works with making small physical gadgets that use a lot of gears, please contact me about some design help.

Today at the grocery store I saw a copy of Blender with the magazines.  I’ve always had a soft spot for the magazine because I remember the first issue having a half page story on Neu! (I believe it was written by Douglas Wolk.)  I was kind of excited that they started publishing again.  Then I noticed it was dated from over a year ago.

Senses Returning, Customer Service, Recording, etc

Today I woke up having regained feeling in my big toe & thumb & index finger on my right side.  My balance was greatly improved by this & I took advantage of it by walking to the bank.

I can’t believe how crappy some internet company’s customer service is.  I have contacted customer service at four places about different things in the past 24 hours with only one actual reply.  Strangely, the only one that replied is the only one where I wasn’t trying to buy something.  So I’ll give a shout-out to Sweetwater for kicking ass & having the greatest customer service ever.

Did some recording today.  A failed electro track, a nice short garage-rocker, & some more work on the big Remora piece that isn’t an album & I don’t know what to call it besides “top secret” & “potentially nauseating.”

I put the wristbands up for sale on www.silbermedia.com on the frontpage (put QRD on the frontpage as well) they’re $2 or free with any order of $10 or more by this Monday.

Talked to Brian McKenzie (Electric Bird Noise) a bit about recording our versus record together in August.

Got in a couple interviews for QRD #42.  So my dream of being monthly seems within my grasp.

research, comics, drum conversion, NC laws

Did some research for new websites for my promo list for both the comics & music side of Silber.

Worked some more on the comics follow-up.

Did the measurements for designing my pipe system to convert a bass drum into a floor tom.  I wanted to do mine with a keyboard stand for an SK1 built on the top.  Does anybody have some extra 3/4 pipe lying around they can send me so I don’t need to spend $20?

I saw some promo pictures of that Swedish band The Knife wearing plague/silberspy masks.  Kinda made me a little sad.  But you can’t trademark something over 500 years old.

I just realized that when I sell my comics for $1 online, I get $0.64 after Paypal fees & it’s $0.44 to mail them.  I’m not sure if $0.20 covers the cost of toner & paper & envelope & staple.  So I may eventually raise the price.

On QRD for making money from my advertising kickbacks, I’d forgotten about North Carolina passing a law that having an affiliate in the state means doing business in the state & needing to collect taxes.  Which means six of my affiliates were canceled without my realizing it.  Lame.  At least it makes me think I’m more right than ever to be trying to sell ads rather than do the kickback stuff.

QRD is Up! Oh, & some other things.

So the new QRD is up – www.silbermedia.com/qrd -  20 in-depth interviews with 20 guitar players.  Please help spread the word about it (put a link to it on twitter or facebook or your myspace status).  I’m pretty stoked that it’s finally done.

I got out my first round of follow up emails for the mini-comic promos that went out last week.

I ordered some parts today to experiment with making a totally retarded guitar gadget that I’ve been thinking about making for five years.  We’ll see if it works out.

For quite a while I’ve been looking for a conversion kit to put my bass drum stand like a floor tom.  Today I was looking at it & it just seemed so obvious that I just need to hook some pipes in where the rack toms hook in & I have it done.  So I might need to make a trip to the hardware store & spend $20 soon.

QRD Almost Ready & Silber Bracelets

Working on the QRD website.  Got the ads all set up & the last interviews proofed.  Just have to finish setting up the layout on the interviews.  Probably about an hour & a half to go on it to be ready.  Then the promo on it.  But I am trying to get more sleep.

Speaking of promo, I need to do the follow up for the mini-comics.

I got in the Silber bands/bracelets.  I’m pretty stoked about them.  I need to look into how much they cost to ship so I can set the sales point.

Been getting a boost in mini-comic sales with the feature on Cerebus TV.  So I guess it’s effective.

QRD & Blogging

Okay, I got a lot of proofing done & also did some more stuff with getting ads for QRD.  I have just two more interviews to proof (three if the 20th interview makes it in).  So I’m getting pretty excited about it coming to fruition.   There’s going to end up being about 20 ads of what I’ve deemed appropriate corporate ads (things like Amazon & InSound that issue kickbacks to me on orders), I’d really hoped to sell all the slots, but you can’t always get what you want.

This is my 501st blog entry.  I’m not sure that my two year blog experiment has been too successful in generating revenue, but I like to think it has generated some level of friendship between me & those who like Silber in a way that most labels never make happen.

Excuses & Dreams

I am embarrassed by how long it’s taking me to get the proofing done for the guitarist interview series, so I guess I’ll reveal why….

About ten days ago I woke up with a pain in my back that was probably around a 9 on the pain scale (10 on the pain scale is the most pain you’ve been in in your life).  The pain was bad enough I couldn’t feel my legs at all & the only reason I could manage to get out of bed was because I had no choice.  Over the next two days the pain in my back had pretty well dissipated, but I still couldn’t feel the bottom half of my right leg.  Over the past week, the numbness spread up my leg as well as into my right arm & this morning it spread into the lower part of the right side of my face.  So I’m kinda freaking out.  It’s hard to concentrate on things when something that wrong is going on in your body.  From all the research I’ve done & talking to a few folks in the medical field, the basic possibilities are it will go away in three months or be permanent & the list of possible causes are all diseases that only have pain managements as treatments & cost a lot of money to get officially diagnosed (multiple MRIs & all that).  So I just need to deal with it, which is hard to do because the numbness gives me a feeling reminiscent of taking narcotics with liquor drinks (remember the late 1990s?).

Last Night’s Dream:
I’m hiding in my brother’s house & at first it looks like storm clouds on the horizon, but it’s the plumes of smoke from their war machines.  I ask my brother to loan me two pistols & a rifle, that he can get them back from my dead body tomorrow.  That they only want me & I shouldn’t have ever come there & gotten him involved.  He tells me no.  I start looking through the house for a gun, but all I can find are my nephew’s toy guns.  My brother’s wife is sewing (mending a shirt) & my brother is sitting at a desk writing on a piece of paper looking out the window when the first air machine becomes visible.  My brother asks me, “Are they all coming?” “Yes.” “Then let’s take this war to their city, when no one’s protecting it.”  He rolls up a rug & lifts a trap door & hands me a backpack of guns & takes another for himself.  He says, “Let’s go.”  I hit him as hard as I can on his left cheek & he falls down, knocked out cold.  I grab the second backpack & go outside running away from the house as fast as I can.  Maybe my brother was right.  Maybe I can take this war to them today instead of just dying.

QRD & Cerebus TV

So I spent the majority of the day proofing some of the interviews.  Which are much longer & take longer to do than I suppose I’d anticipated.  The short ones are 6 pages long & the long ones are nine.  But I do think that there a need for a deep content interview webzine I’m hoping to fill the space.

The Cerebus TV about my mini-comics is streaming right now.
