XLK & Pagemaker

Wrote a possible draft for Extreme Lost Kisses.

I’m having some kind of problem that Pagemaker won’t let me export PDFs.  I uninstallled & re-installed & still have the same problem.  It’s keeping me from getting some work done & I don’t understand it.  Spent six hours so far trying to figure it out.  Not sure that it’s going to happen.  When I export a printed file & manually create a PDF it changes the page size to not be pleasing to me.  What happened in the past week to change things around to not work?  I’d guess a windows update I didn’t notice?

QRD, Stores, Mastering, Wet Teens, Electric Bird Noise, Extreme Lost Kisses

It seems so hard to get things done these days.

Spent most of the day researching places to try to get to advertise on QRD.  Contacted about 100 more indie labels.  It’s strange to me how no one gets back to me about advertising.  Except people I talk to on the phone.  Which isn’t really my deal.  I’m not calling & begging for $10 for an ad that probably has a lifetime value closer to at least $50.  I’ve pretty much decided that all 100 ad slots are going to be filled.  If 90 of them are Silber related, that’s fine.

Spent another chunk of the day doing some research about record stores.  Passed on the remainder of it to one of the Silber interns (thanks Steve!).

Did a little work for mastering something for vinyl for my son Andrew.  If I’m really going to start mastering for vinyl, I need to get some kind of software that can do what I do when mastering for vinyl because a lot of it is mechanical, but tedious in my software.  Roll off this eq, roll down this eq, make anything below this frequency mono.  Anyone know if there’s a good freeware/shareware for making those adjustments while still using my ears for other parts of the mastering process?

Talked to Brian McKenzie a bit about the Wet Teens release. (I want to have them make some radio edit versions of certain songs, because I’m not sure that you can say “fag” on the radio or “dick” when referring to a sexual organ.  But The Wet Teens seem to think making it into a double entendra (sp?) is kind of a violation of the work of the original Michael Mercury (the current Michael Mercury (Michael Charles Wood, Jr)’s father).  I don’t know, I think if he was around he’d tell Michael to do whatever it takes to make the band work.)  Also talked to him about an Electric Bird Noise album for the fall, recording the Electric Bird Noise/Remora duet/versus record, & whether or not mastering a recording should go out of the box at the last minute to “warm up” the sound (I’m torn on this because one of my big things with mastering for people is that I get it done quickly & inexpensively & transferring the songs to tape & then back to digital would add an extra 2-3 hours of labor time, essentially doubling the amount of time I spend on an album, raising the price to what a lot of other engineers charge.  Maybe I’ll start doing a single track & offering to do the whole album, but letting the clients know the price difference.).

Got an email from Nick Marino about how the script for Extreme Lost Kisses is going.  Of course the answer is I’m not sure.  I’ve tried to scripts for it.  One of them came out as nihilistic black ops & over the top even by my standards to try to tell a fifty sentence story that could be read in one sitting.  The other is maybe too goofy.  I think I might pretend I’m Stan Lee & have Nick do the story like Jack Kirby used to & then I just put in words.  I’ll send him the scripts & get his feedback I suppose.  It makes me have more doubts than ever about me trying to write a “mainstream” comic one day.  I’ve been pretty into the golden age comics lately & I really would like to try my hand at something in that style.

I talked to Mathew Reese (former music director at Jacksonville State’s radio station & current indie record store employee) about trying to do more to reach out to stores in an attempt to really stay involved in making physical objects.  He told me that over the past year more & more servicing at the radio station had gone to digital only (which is interesting) & that he thought reaching out directly to stores offering some of the back catalog at deeply discounted prices for purchase (not consignment) might be something that would work.  I never know how much it costs for my CDs when they get them from the distros, but Matt said new releases are $8.99-$11.99.  So if I can swing to sell stores some of the overstock at $5 a piece with a minimum order of four discs total, it might be worth it to everybody.  We’ll see what happens.  I’m going to ruminate on it quite a bit.  Probably try to run that attempt at promotion in the fall.

Mini-Comic Assembly

Just spent the day assembling mini-comics.  Longer & more tedious than I’d like, but necessary.  Might co-op the promos with some friendly comic types to save some cash.  We’ll see what happens.

Talking a bit more with Melissa Gardner about XO & it seems like we might kick some steam back up on the series.

Old Guitar, New Printer, Other Stuff.

I actually did some fooling around with recording today.  I pulled out my japanese surf guitar that I used to hate & it seems kinda cool to me today.  It has a narrow neck & I had it strung with only three strings (which seems like the kind of thing I’d remember having done, but I haven’t looked at the guitar since 1998 & probably haven’t played it since 1996.

I got my new printer & evidently “full color scanner-fax-copier-laser printer” means black & white laser printer with a full color scanner.  Which is kinda fucked up to me.  But I’m too lazy to return things.

Tomorrow Bryce Eiman of Weather Machine is having a pretty major surgery.  So if you’re the praying or hoping type, there’s your info.

Remember a few months ago (or was it years ago?) MySpace did the thing where you could have a MySpace email address?  Well I finally just tried mine out & it doesn’t work?  What’s funny about that is some folks I’m in contact with I had switched over to contact them via email to their MySpace email address & I guess that means they haven’t been getting the messages.  Awesome.

I think I’m going to start collecting label names from playlists at stations that traditionally support Silber & contacting some folks about placing ads that way.

I’m growing a scruffy little beard thing to use for some photo shoot stuff for Mecha.  Still haven’t decided what to do on the manufacturing of it.

I started trying to grow some cactus seedlings the other day.  There actually is a why to it.  I’m planning on having them as merch eventually for Small Life Form.

Lotte Kestner, XO, Built, QRD

Did the layout for the Lotte Kestner digital download booklet.  Sent it to Anna-Lynne for approval.
Did some minor editing of a track on her record & got the approval of it.  It was a little click noise that shouldn’t have annoyed me as much as it did, so I just reduced it’s noise by 50% & left it in so it still had the live recording integrity.

Did the minor re-writes & layouts for the mini-comics XO#7 & Built #1 & sent them for the artists to draw.

Sent out some more emails for the guitarist interview series for QRD.

Chatted (via email) with Sam at Projekt about some things missing in my pitch for getting ads on QRD.  I didn’t mention the number of visitors QRD gets a month, which over the past year is 9000-10,000 per month.  I hadn’t really checked the stats on it before & was surprised it was that high with no regular new content.  Equally interesting I suppose is that I’ve gotten I think one donation over the past year.

I accidentally found out how to make a playlist on MySpace.  I guess I need to use that feature at some point….

Printer, Dio, Built, Dreams

My new printer that I ordered, I got a call that it was sold out (it was discontinued & on clearance for half price).  I found a comparable one for a similar price.  We’ll see what happens.  Puts me in a worse mood than it should.

So Ronnie James Dio died.  He died from cancer rather than a lighting bolt to a triumphant held sword.  It’s funny how certain random celebrity deaths I don’t care about & others kinda hit me.

Sent out a draft of Built for the artist to review & got positive feedback.  Have to do the layout on it.

Recent Dreams:
I’ve gone blind.  Strangely it increased my ability to make music & write comics, but I had to do away with the whole business aspect of my work because it involved too much use of my eyes to fill orders & fill out paperwork.  Working on the music was interesting because obviously I needed a certain amount of help with setting up my equipment.  The comics I just record my ideas & have mp3s sent to the artists.  I rely on my collaborators more greatly than before & though I can’t be sure, I feel it makes things better.  If not, at least it negates my ability to be dissatisfied.

Playing with a gun.  Taking it apart.  Putting it back together.  I don’t have any bullets.  Which will either kill or save me.

QRD as work? – Smiley Face, Broken Printer – Frowny Face

So I spent the majority of the day trying to figure out if I could make QRD work in such a way to bring significant income.  Surprisingly my answer seemed to be yes?  I’m planning to start to make it monthly.  I’ve got it set up so that there are $1000 worth of ad spaces available a month & the majority of them cost $10 & are permanent placements that I would say are worth more than I’m charging.  But of course I haven’t sold any yet.  Sent to about twenty friends websites about doing ad trades.  Sent to about 50 small labels about placing ads.  If things work out I guess I’d have to raise my rates.  Which I think at the double the price would still be fair & all of a sudden I’m making a living wage for the first time in a couple years.  So anyone have any suggestions for advertisers I should contact?  Labels, mailorder places, whatever?  I tried to see who spends money on the over priced ads on Pitchfork & strangely the answer seems to be cell phone companies?

Incidentally, I’m planning on doing away with a lot of the ads that have previously been on QRD.  The state of NC made it illegal to have kickbacks from out of state companies on websites.  (Well, technically they said that having a presence on a website owned by an NC resident was materially doing business & thus required to paid sales tax; so all the companies canceled NC accounts.)  Google keeps raising their rates at which I’ll finally get my elusive check for their ads.  So it seems I’m better off running things myself.  If all 100 ads on QRD are for Silber products, I suppose that’s okay too.

So my printer ran out of toner & I’d ordered some generic toner to put in it that was certified to work & it seems to have screwed it up a bit & repair parts for the toner cartridge & drum would be $100.  I found a refurbished CMYK laser printer for only $200.  So I went for the upgrade.  Now what am I supposed to do with the old one that I have loved so much for so long?  I guess I need to throw it away.  I think I’ve had it for about eight years & I guess that’s the lifetime of a printer….  So I guess the future of me doing color press releases & comics might be near at hand.

I finished writing the first draft of my mini-comic Built.

Got an email from Pat Kain that he’ll be working on the Vigilant mini-comic over the next couple months.

Going to try to do some work on Remora: Mecha before going to sleep.

Remora: Mecha

I mastered up the three additional tracks to Remora: Mecha (original recordings are 2.5 years old) & put them in what seems a good order.  Anybody know a good, cheap place to get 50 CD-Rs pressed?

Made the video for the new Remora: Mecha track “049″.

I’m pretty excited about it finally coming out.  I don’t know what the fan reaction will be.  No guitars.  All robots.  At least mostly robots.

Still gotta do the layout for the art for it.

Vinyl, Video, Advances

So I guess the big announcement that needs to be made is Silber will be working with Pork Records to release some vinyl.   We’re going to start with the Sarah June disc this September & see how things go from there.  They’ll be in charge of everything about the vinyl that I don’t want to deal with the headaches of.  So all of you kids that have complained about us not doing any vinyl can maybe have your dreams come true.  When time is coming for other stuff assuming things go smoothly, maybe I’ll let you loyal fans decide what will be next on vinyl.

I shot this artsy video today of light experiments.  Not sure what the final use for it will be.

I’ve been getting some contacts lately from bands that think Silber has money to court them lately.  It’s flattering in one way & ridiculous in another.  I have to wonder if I gave a $5000 advance to almost anyone on the label for recording, would they use it to go to a studio or to build/improve their home studio?  Me?  I think I’d get a couple good video cameras or something with it, maybe buy the POG & Wammy pedals, maybe get a sound card/digital interface with more inputs, maybe get those bass midi footpedals & something to hook them up to.  I can’t really imagine a scenario where I was going into a studio unless it was because it was somebody I was friends with that I wanted to work with.  I don’t know.  Maybe I’d go into a studio to record drums or vocals.  Just because I have trouble getting those two things to sound good sometimes.

Assembled about 50 mini-comics today.  I need to get some envelopes for mailing out the promos in as the package will be too thick for a standard envelope, but I think to flimsy for the plastic envelopes I have too many of (designed for 8.5×5.5 zines).  Maybe I could just put a piece of card stock in those….

Talked to my son Andrew a bit about things he could do as gimmicks to draw the attention of the modern avant garde composer folks.  Things that I’m not too old to do or anything, but I lack the academic credentials for certain ideas to function within that community.  I don’t know if there’s been a composer respected by academia that didn’t come from academia since WWII & that’s pretty sad.  Or really I guess it just shows elitism & snobbery.  Which is true in all music I suppose.  I don’t know.  I guess I have it too as if I hear the same music from New York or Romania, I always go with the Romanians….

So a couple years ago MySpace stopped telling me about people’s birthdays because I had too many friends.  Now Facebook seems to be doing it as well?  Maybe I should go back to using Friendster….

A Productive Day or a Long Blog?

I decided to hold off on my mass mailing about the digital shop.  Because there are going to be some digital only releases coming in June & I want to stick to the max of four mass emails a year to customers, so that’s the main reason for the delay.

I sent off about 65 emails for doing interviews for the QRD guitarist interview series.  New issue of QRD in June!  Another new issue in July!  No promises for August!

I’m still offering the ridiculously low priced ads at QRD for anyone interested.  A permanent ad for the sidebar of an individual issue is $10.  Know anyone I should solicit?  Does anyone know any zines/blogs they think I should hit up for ad swaps?

Speaking of QRD, does anyone know how to add an RSS feed to a site?  I am not looking for someone to tell me to make a wordpress site.  I’m comfortable with the current functionality & like that it doesn’t look bloggy, I just want to add an RSS feed for the people who might use it.

Sent out a second wave of emails to record stores with reviews of the recent releases.  Maybe it’ll generate an extra 20 sales through the distros.  I guess if I get requests for re-stocks this week I can assume it worked.

Fixed the alphabetical order catalog page & special sales page on the site to have the digital download stuff.

Did a little research on bloggers to add to the promo list.

I posted to the Silber/QRD Yahoo group about the digital shop.  There’s about 150 people still on the group.  Strangely I hadn’t posted anything on it since last December.  I think it’s because I was using Grouply & Grouply stopped working properly & I didn’t know it.

Got an email from Shane that he is steadily working on Ultimate Lost Kisses #12.

I have a lot of stuff to do over the next couple of weeks.  I need to get my to do list & keep it handy so I can stay focused.  Gotta get things fixed up for the Remora Mecha disc.  Fix some Remora video stuff up.  Get the mini-comic promos out (which means assembling them.  Get the mini-comics for sale on the website.  Write new mini-comics.  Prepare the digital only releases (pdf artwork, mastering on some, writing press releases, I think that’s everything to be done & thus all to be done).  Try to get QRD advertisers.

It looks like Silber’s web ranking on Alexa is having a major drop coming (from 1.5 millionth to 3 millionth most popular).  Not sure why it is.  I guess the buzz over the new releases?  Trying to bring that spike back around.  We’ll see what happens.

Talked to my son Andrew Weathers about a possible top secret project last night.  Things are top secret when I don’t know if they’ll come to fruition.

Talked to Nic Slaton a bit more about his Silber release.  It’s going to happen.

Starting to plan for a digital only new Silber label sampler.  It’ll basically just have the free sample tracks from the releases since 2006, but of course there’s the new stuff coming that I want to have tracks of included.  So some of the things might end up with exclusive mixes & what not.  It’ll only cost $1.

I was noticing that I have never made Remora: Anadia available.  I’m thinking about revisiting the recordings to see what I think of releasing it digitally.  Maybe doing something with Anaaron & Acroyer as well.  Also possibly Remora: Live in Oslo.  I don’t know.  Just something I’m thinking about at this point.  If I’m really going to do that I should find a four track cassette machine that has four outputs so I can convert the original tapes to digital & spend a year trying to fix stuff that no one will care about.
