June & July News

July 10, 2007

I just realized I hadn’t posted up here that Remora has some upcoming shows again in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, & Columbus.  There will be another early Saturday morning radio session on WCSB.

We have the re-mastered version of Lycia’s Cold just back from manufacturing.

Lycia – Cold Now
Shipping! In Stores Soon!

CD Album 2007 | Silber 061
9 tracks, 58 minutes
$12

Despite being one of Lycia’s more atmospheric works, Cold became a big hit amongst the black metal & space rock crowds expanding their fan base greatly.  On the Cold tour, one would typically see as many fans in Hawkwind & Motorhead t-shirts as Sisters of Mercy t-shirts; forty-year-old rockers standing next to teenaged Goths.

In the studio right now are both Remora & Vlor.  Possible new albums from both early next year.

Also those of you wondering what all is going to be coming out on Silber this fall, we have slated releases from Plumerai, Origami Arktika, mwvm, & Hotel Hotel.  Also a Halloween Compilation.  & maybe a Remora EP.

June 23, 2007

A few weeks ago while on tour, Remora & Electric Bird Noise did a 40 minute collaborative piece on WCSB.  Our good friend Ryan Kuehn was managing the mixing board & he has a recording of it you can listen to

& you can check out his blog while you’re at it.

June 6, 2007

Remora: songs i sing

We have in stock the new release from Remora!

Remora - songs i sing Remora – songs i sing
CD EP 2007 | North Pole 005
13 tracks, 16 minutes, plus 1 video
$9

Well, here is a release you thought would never exist. For those of you who have not seen Remora live in the past two years (or gotten personal phone messages), this side of Remora is completely unknown.  On this release Remora goes a cappella in the songs from the live show done while tuning guitar.  Sometimes comedic, sometimes spiritual, & occasionally poignant.  This was predominantly recorded by Jessica Bailiff during Remora’s 2006 spring tour & includes covers of “We Will Fall” (The Stooges), “Heartworms” (Coil), “Sores” (Rollerball), & a passage from Job.  Beautiful hand letter-pressed artwork by Shane Sauers & a video for “Sores” also by Mister Sauers.  If Devo 2.0 was the weirdest thing in your collection, this is for you!

Silber Computer Repaired by Darin DePaolo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My buddy Darin who resurrected my computer in 2003 has raised it from the dead again by changing out the power supply which evidentally only lasts about ten years (original parts remaining are now case, 1 hard drive, 1 CD-drive).  So some of the things that have been slowed down lately should get back up & going the next few days.

New QRD

The new QRD is online. We have a lot going on this issue.  As some of you may know, I was in a car crash a few months ago & I have been talking to a lot of people about it & so I have a ton of car crash stories from semi-famous folks like Alan Sparhawk, James Newman, Nathan Amundson, Will Dodson,  & myself.  Nathan Amundson contributes a few more times for a Rivulets interview & an appearance in I Heart FX & a piece he co-wrote with me on Gifts for Touring Musicians.  We have two short stories from long time contributor Patricia Russo called Bound and Loose & See and Say.  A nice little short short from Tara Vanflower called She Was a Doll.  I guess the big surprise interview this issue is David Galas, who last appeared in QRD #1 as a member of Lycia.  We have an interview with our buddy Jamie Barnes who will hopefully interview his dad for us in June.  There is an interview with Max Soren of The Goslings.  Finally finishing up we have two more installments of I Heart FX from Martin Newman (Plumerai) & Shane DeLeon Sauers (Rollerball).  So a big issue.  & hopefully there will be more soon.  I’m shooting for another one in two months.

In other Remora news go here to vote for Remora so they can play on a big huge stage in an event sponsored by Nissan.

xo#2 & a couple reviews

Hey Kidz,

The big news this week is xo #2 is available for ordering physical copies or you can just watch it online on our site or spread the word with it on IFC Medialab & YouTube.

Below are a few recent reviews.

hrt
Brian John Mitchell

VLOR: A FIRE IS MEANT FOR BURNING
Vlor? The name sounds like this should be some sort of obscure black metal band. Or maybe an alien race from a sci-fi TV show. But Vlor is actually a band, or project really, devoted to making lovely layered shoegazing guitar sonics in a minimal, post-rock style, a bit like Windsor For The Derby, or maybe old AQ faves Codeine (like an intro to one of their songs though, before it really kicks in with drums n’ all). One guy, Brian J. Mitchell, seems to be the instigator here, playing on all the tracks, joined by various other friendly collaborating guitarists over the course of the album, including members of Remora, Aarktica, Lycia, Rivulets, and Jessica Bailiff (who also contributes some breathy vocals to the very short “Suncatcher”, an anomaly on this otherwise instrumental album). Many of the tracks are trembling, mellow and quite pleasant, with some (like “Wires”) getting a bit more menacing, with th’ distortion factor upped… A good blend of the repetitive, experimental and the almost indie-pop, in the realm of guitar explorations. Quite Nice!
~ Aquarius Records

ALAN SPARHAWK: SOLO GUITAR
Away from his work with slowcore supremos Low, this is Alan Sparhawk on his own with just guitar & effects.  Entirely instrumental, comprised of short abstract pieces & longer, extended explorations, Sparhawk’s forays into the molten, dream-drift orbits of Loren Connors, Hisato Higuchi, & Earth’s Dylan Carlson creat an intriguing work of reverb-heavy, metal-stringed experimentation.
~ Mojo

Alan Sparhawk = Windy and Carl + Slowdive “Pygmalion” + Godspeed You Black Emperor!
You might expect to be in a world of trouble when the equation above is mixed together with the name Alan Sparhawk.  While mostly known for his central role in Low, this solo work (finally!) shows the truly tortured artist we have always wanted out of Spahawk.  Recorded live in a church with just some guitar loops & some reverb, Sparhawk is drenched in mid 90s shoegaze, a Twin Peaks episode from Season One and Canada.  Amazing.  Layer upon layer of textured attack & cease-and-desist restraint resonate as the album moves deftly between an architecture of brooding build up and Orchestrated sea faring.  While Low is the pop side & Black-Eyed Snakes is his rockin’ side, Alan’s solo stuff is a 90s mid-life crisis finally shooed out the door.  This release is A+ if you like the drone – not too much and not too little.
~ Erik Lopez, Slug Magazine

Low’s Alan Sparhawk takes a surprising left turn into meditational Krautrock. Beautifully patient instrumentals with an ancient, almost menacing edge, well-tempered with minimalist layers of soothing drones and loops.
~ Michael Chamy, Dallas Oserver

BLACK HAPPY DAY: IN THE GARDEN OF THE GHOSTFLOWERS
Featuring members of Stone Breath and Lycia, an eerie shotgun wedding of folksy medieval dirges and magickal ambiance from the dark side of Stonehenge.
~ Michael Chamy, Dallas Oserver

Remora on Ambient Ping Things

Remora will be on the AMBiENT PiNG RADiO ALMOST LiVE SERiES on January 22 & it will include debuts of some new songs & reworkings of some classics with an edge towards Remora’s ambient side.

Initial recordings for the next Vlor album have started.  It might take a year to finish to make it as good as we want it.
